Publisher: Het Spinhuis
ISBN: 9789055891368
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 208
Book Description
For most consumers, advertising is less important than ad- vertisers might think. Advertising appears to function as something in the background that is hardly noticed, as "wallpaper," But mass-mediated advertising should at least function as a reminder when people are making choices. Smit addresses these questions through in-depth interviews, a nation-wide telephone survey with follow-up mail and a face-to-face survey. Edith Smit is associate professor at the Department of Communication at the University of Amsterdam and at the Amsterdam School of Communications Research (ascor). She is also Deputy Director of swocc, the Dutch Foundation for Fundamental Research on Commercial Communication.

Arab Mass Media
Author: William A. Rugh
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 0313067856
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 280
Book Description
Since September 11, 2001, and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, many television viewers in the United States have become familiar with Al Jazeera as offering an alternative take on events from that presented by mainstream U.S. media, as well as disseminating anti-American invective. Westerners have tended toward simplistic views of Arab newspapers, radio, and television, assuming that they are all under government control and that freedom of press is non-existent. William A. Rugh, a long time observer of the Arab mass media, offers a more nuanced picture of the Arab press as it relates to the political situation in the Arab world today. Although governmental influence over the media is stronger in the Middle East than in Europe or the United States, Rugh argues that there is more diversity in the Arab media than most people in the West realize. In reality, the Arab media are coming to reflect the diversity and wide range of opinions of those within the Arab world itself. In particular, the advent of privately owned Arab satellite television in the 1990s has led to significant liberalization of the media throughout the region. Rugh concludes that a democracy of ideas and voices is slowly growing in the Arab world, and he remains guardedly optimistic about the positive role the Arab media can play in processes of democratization and nation-building.

Communism, Capitalism and the Mass Media
Author: Colin Sparks
Publisher: SAGE
ISBN: 9781446224830
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 244
Book Description
Colin Sparks provides a challenging reassessment of the impact of the collapse of communism on the media systems of Eastern Europe. He analyzes both the changes themselves and their implications for the ways in which we think about the mass media, while also demonstrating that most of the orthodox accounts of the end of communism are seriously flawed. There are much greater continuities between the old system and the new than are captured by the theories that argue that there has been a radical and fundamental change. Instead of marking the end of critical inquiry or the end of history, as some have suggested, Sparks argues that the collapse of the communist systems demonstrates how very limited and frequently incorrect the main ways of discussing the mass media are. He concludes with a provocative discussion of the ways in which we need to modify our thinking in the light of these developments.
