The Nature of the Future

The Nature of the Future PDF Author: Emily Pawley
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 0226820025
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 310

Book Description
"In the seemingly mundane Northern farm of early America and the people who sought to improve its productivity and efficiency, Emily Pawley finds a world rich with innovative practices and marked by a developing interrelationship between scientific knowledge, industrial methods, and capitalism. Agricultural "improvers" became increasingly scientistic, driving tremendous increases in the range and volume of agricultural output-and transforming American conceptions of expertise, success, and exploitation. Pawley's focus on soil, fertilizer, apples, mulberries, agricultural fairs, and experimental stations shows each nominally dull subject to have been an area of intellectual ferment and sharp contestation: mercantile, epistemological, and otherwise"--

Book Description
Discover the story of the supreme sacrifice of the great sachem of the Wappinger Confederacy, the patriot Chief Daniel Nimham, an unsung hero of the American Revolution. Author Thomas F. Maxson has now compiled the details of the struggle of the great sachem and his people in their fight to retain their ancestral homeland, and of their supreme sacrifice in helping to secure independence for all who have followed since. The many other patriots of Mount Nimham who have lived, worked, loved, and died on, and in the shadow of, the mountain that bears Chief Daniel Nimham's name, are detailed as well. Familiar names, such as Smalley, Townsend, Russell, Cole, Hopkins, Hawkins, Light, Dean, and others, also live on in the grateful hearts and minds of the people of Kent for their patriotism and devotion to our town through the years. Follow their stories over the decades, as the mountain has been transformed from a farming and mining community in years past, to a spiritual and recreational mecca today.

The 18th New York Infantry in the Civil War

The 18th New York Infantry in the Civil War PDF Author: Ryan A. Conklin
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 1476667160
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 496

Book Description
Responding to President Lincoln's initial call for troops, the 18th New York Infantry emerged as one of the Excelsior State's first regiments and mustered many of its earliest volunteers. Formed of companies from across the state, the unit saw combat early, suffering the first casualties of the Bull Run campaign when they were ambushed on the march four days before the battle. As part of the Army of the Potomac, they fought at Gaines's Mill, Crampton's Gap, Antietam, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. Drawing on numerous sources including several unpublished letters and diaries, this book gives the complete history of the 18th--from the first enlistee to the last surviving veteran (who died in 1938)--with an emphasis on the experiences of individual soldiers.

Handbook of the Linguistic Atlas of the Middle and South Atlantic States

Handbook of the Linguistic Atlas of the Middle and South Atlantic States PDF Author: William A. Kretzschmar
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 9780226452838
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 476

Book Description
Who uses "skeeter hawk," "snake doctor," and "dragonfly" to refer to the same insect? Who says "gum band" instead of "rubber band"? The answers can be found in the Linguistic Atlas of the Middle and South Atlantic States (LAMSAS), the largest single survey of regional and social differences in spoken American English. It covers the region from New York state to northern Florida and from the coastline to the borders of Ohio and Kentucky. Through interviews with nearly twelve hundred people conducted during the 1930s and 1940s, the LAMSAS mapped regional variations in vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation at a time when population movements were more limited than they are today, thus providing a unique look at the correspondence of language and settlement patterns. This handbook is an essential guide to the LAMSAS project, laying out its history and describing its scope and methodology. In addition, the handbook reveals biographical information about the informants and social histories of the communities in which they lived, including primary settlement areas of the original colonies. Dialectologists will rely on it for understanding the LAMSAS, and historians will find it valuable for its original historical research. Since much of the LAMSAS questionnaire concerns rural terms, the data collected from the interviews can pinpoint such language differences as those between areas of plantation and small-farm agriculture. For example, LAMSAS reveals that two waves of settlement through the Appalachians created two distinct speech types. Settlers coming into Georgia and other parts of the Upper South through the Shenandoah Valley and on to the western side of the mountain range had a Pennsylvania-influenced dialect, and were typically small farmers. Those who settled the Deep South in the rich lowlands and plateaus tended to be plantation farmers from Virginia and the Carolinas who retained the vocabulary and speech patterns of coastal areas. With these revealing findings, the LAMSAS represents a benchmark study of the English language, and this handbook is an indispensable guide to its riches.
