Race, Gender and Empire in American Detective Fiction

Race, Gender and Empire in American Detective Fiction PDF Author: John Cullen Gruesser
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 1476612749
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 216

Book Description
This book highlights detection’s malleability by analyzing the works of particular groups of authors from specific time periods written in response to other texts. It traces the roles that gender, race and empire have played in American detective fiction from Edgar Allan Poe’s works through the myriad variations upon them published before 1920 to hard-boiled fiction (the origins of which derive in part from turn-of-the-20th-century notions about gender, race and nationality), and it concludes with a discussion of contemporary mystery series with inner-city settings that address black male and female heroism.

The Origins of the American Detective Story

The Origins of the American Detective Story PDF Author: LeRoy Lad Panek
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 0786481382
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 237

Book Description
Edgar Allan Poe essentially invented the detective story in 1841 with Murders in the Rue Morgue. In the years that followed, however, detective fiction in America saw no significant progress as a literary genre. Much to the dismay of moral crusaders like Anthony Comstock, dime novels and other sensationalist publications satisfied the public's hunger for a yarn. Things changed as the century waned, and eventually the detective was reborn as a figure of American literature. In part these changes were due to a combination of social conditions, including the rise and decline of the police as an institution; the parallel development of private detectives; the birth of the crusading newspaper reporter; and the beginnings of forensic science. Influential, too, was the new role model offered by a wildly popular British import named Sherlock Holmes. Focusing on the late 19th century and early 20th, this volume covers the formative years of American detective fiction. “Polar noir”: Reading African-American Detective Fiction

“Polar noir”: Reading African-American Detective Fiction PDF Author: Claude Julien (dir.). Alice Mills
Publisher: Presses universitaires François-Rabelais
ISBN: 2869065132
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 224

Book Description
Curiosity and the desire to grasp the specificity of an abundantly read African American genre born as the 20th century was beginning are the research intentions that inspire this volume. Indeed, only recently has African-American detective fiction drawn the attention of scholars in spite of its very diverse blossoming since the 1960s. Diverse, because it has moved out of its birth place, East coast cities, and because female novelists have contributed their own production. At the heart of this popular genre, as novelists BarbaraNeely, Paula Woods and Gar Haywood tell us, is black existence: black memory, black living places and the human environments that build the individual - hence a détour to the French Caribbean.

Spanish and Latin American Women’s Crime Fiction in the New Millennium

Spanish and Latin American Women’s Crime Fiction in the New Millennium PDF Author: Nancy Vosburg
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1527505200
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 179

Book Description
Crime fiction written by women in Spain and Latin America since the late 1980s has been successful in shifting attention to crimes often overlooked by their male counterparts, such as rape and sexual battery, domestic violence, child pornography, pederasty, and incest. In the twenty-first century, social, economic, and political issues, including institutional corruption, class inequality, criminalized oppression of immigrant women, crass capitalist market forces, and mediatized political and religious bodies, have at their core a gendered dimension. The conventions of the original noir, or novela negra, genre have evolved, such that some women authors challenge the noir formulas by foregrounding gender concerns while others imagine new models of crime fiction that depart drastically from the old paradigms. This volume, highlighting such evolution in the crime fiction genre, will be of interest to students, teachers, and scholars of crime fiction in Latin America and Spain, to those interested in crime fiction by women, and to readers familiar with the sub-genres of crime fiction, which include noir, the thriller, the police procedural, and the “cozy” novel.
