Book Description
This book is called The Everest Principle because Mt. Everest is the highest, and arguably, one of the most challenging mountains a person can climb. The metaphor of climbing Mt. Everest is woven throughout the book as a means to guide you through the trail markers for peak performance. Everyone has, at some point in their life, an Everest to ascend. The Everest Principle becomes your "outfitter" to assess, prepare, train, guide, and equip you for the expedition to the top of your personal Everest. This Principle requires the use of an integrative approach that addresses your medical, nutritional, physical, and behavioral health. Peak performance does not limit itself to the elite athlete or performer. It is for anyone who wants to improve his or her individual life. These treks may include real-life challenges such as achieving a higher level in your relationship with another, getting a promotion, running your first 5K fun run, or weight loss. The purpose of this book is to instill you with the belief that you can overcome barriers, attain high-level goals, and enhance your life in every way!

Principles of Neural Design

Principles of Neural Design PDF Author: Peter Sterling
Publisher: MIT Press
ISBN: 0262534681
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 567

Book Description
Two distinguished neuroscientists distil general principles from more than a century of scientific study, “reverse engineering” the brain to understand its design. Neuroscience research has exploded, with more than fifty thousand neuroscientists applying increasingly advanced methods. A mountain of new facts and mechanisms has emerged. And yet a principled framework to organize this knowledge has been missing. In this book, Peter Sterling and Simon Laughlin, two leading neuroscientists, strive to fill this gap, outlining a set of organizing principles to explain the whys of neural design that allow the brain to compute so efficiently. Setting out to “reverse engineer” the brain—disassembling it to understand it—Sterling and Laughlin first consider why an animal should need a brain, tracing computational abilities from bacterium to protozoan to worm. They examine bigger brains and the advantages of “anticipatory regulation”; identify constraints on neural design and the need to “nanofy”; and demonstrate the routes to efficiency in an integrated molecular system, phototransduction. They show that the principles of neural design at finer scales and lower levels apply at larger scales and higher levels; describe neural wiring efficiency; and discuss learning as a principle of biological design that includes “save only what is needed.” Sterling and Laughlin avoid speculation about how the brain might work and endeavor to make sense of what is already known. Their distinctive contribution is to gather a coherent set of basic rules and exemplify them across spatial and functional scales.

The Centaur's Dilemma

The Centaur's Dilemma PDF Author: James E. Baker
Publisher: Brookings Institution Press
ISBN: 0815738005
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 337

Book Description
Assessing the legal and practical questions posed by the use of artificial intelligence in national security matters The increasing use of artificial intelligence poses challenges and opportunities for nearly all aspects of society, including the military and other elements of the national security establishment. This book addresses how national security law can and should be applied to artificial intelligence, which enables a wide range of decisions and actions not contemplated by current law. James Baker, an expert in national security law and process, adopts a realistic approach in assessing how the law—even when not directly addressing artificial intelligence—can be used, or even misused, to regulate this new technology. His new book covers, among other topics, national security process, constitutional law, the law of armed conflict, arms control, and academic and corporate ethics. With his own background as a judge, he examines potential points of contention and litigation in an area where the law is still evolving and might not yet provide clear and certain answers. The Centaur’s Dilemma also analyzes potential risks associated with the use of artificial intelligence in the realm of national security—including the challenges of machine-human interface, operating (or not operating) the national-security decision-making process at machine speed, and the perils of a technology arms race. Written in plain English, The Centaur’s Dilemma will help guide policymakers, lawyers, and technology experts as they deal with the many legal questions that will arise when using artificial intelligence to plan and carry out the actions required for the nation’s defense.
