The Epistles

The Epistles PDF Author: Jacob Boehme
Publisher: Providence Univ
ISBN: 9781897352281
Category : Body, Mind & Spirit
Languages : en
Pages : 236

Book Description
Beloved and much respected friend in Christ - from a member - like obligation (as one branch on the tree is bound to do to the other) and a fellow-working desire, I wish unto you the open well-spring of grace, which God in Christ Jesus hath manifested in our humanity; so that it may richly spring up in you, and the divine sun may thereby cast the influence of its love-beams into the soul; and also therewith stir up and open the great magnetic hunger of the soul (being the true divine mouth) after Christ's flesh and blood, together with bodily welfare.

Chaucer's Dante

Chaucer's Dante PDF Author: Richard Neuse
Publisher: Univ of California Press
ISBN: 0520348745
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 308

Book Description
Richard Neuse here explores the relationship between two great medieval epics, Dante's Divine Comedy and Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. He argues that Dante's attraction for Chaucer lay not so much in the spiritual dimension of the Divine Comedy as in the human. Borrowing Bertolt Brecht's phrase "epic theater," Neuse underscores the interest of both poets in presenting, as on a stage, flesh and blood characters in which readers would recognize the authors as well as themselves. As spiritual autobiography, both poems challenge the traditional medieval mode of allegory, with its tendency to separate body and soul, matter and spirit. Thus Neuse demonstrates that Chaucer and Dante embody a humanism not generally attributed to the fourteenth century. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1991.

How Christian Is Our Present Day Theology?

How Christian Is Our Present Day Theology? PDF Author: Franz Overbeck
Publisher: A&C Black
ISBN: 9780567084293
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 272

Book Description
This book is a translation of Overbeck's famous text, Ueber die Christlichkeit unserer heutigen Theologie (1873, second edition 1903), together with an introduction and notes. The complete original work is translated, including the Introduction and Epilogue, which incorporates some of Overbeck's late reflections on his friendship with Nietzsche and on theology. The unique feature of this book is that it is the first translation into English of any substantial publication by Overbeck. This is also the only work of a programmatic nature that Overbeck ever published on the vexed issue of theology's relationship to Christianity. It raises questions about Christianity in the modern world and the role of theology within religion that still need to be answered. As David Tracy has written, "Overbeck's friend Nietzsche used a hammer against theology; Overbeck himself used a scalpel. And Overbeck is finally the deeper challenge for theology."This translation will make Overbeck's classic work available to a wider public, and thus contribute to a better appreciation of his profound and still unanswered questions for contemporary Christianity.

The Production and Distribution of Knowledge in the United States

The Production and Distribution of Knowledge in the United States PDF Author: Fritz Machlup
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 9780691003566
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 440

Book Description
The Production and Distribution of Knowledge in the United States marked the beginning of the study of our postindustrial information society. Austrian-born economist Fritz Machlup had focused his research on the patent system, but he came to realize that patents were simply one part of a much bigger "knowledge economy." He then expanded the scope of his work to evaluate everything from stationery and typewriters to advertising to presidential addresses--anything that involved the activity of telling anyone anything. The Production and Distribution of Knowledge in the United States then revealed the new and startling shape of the U.S. economy. Machlup's cool appraisal of the data showed that the knowledge industry accounted for nearly 29 percent of the U.S. gross national product, and that 43 percent of the civilian labor force consisted of knowledge transmitters or full-time knowledge receivers. Indeed, the proportion of the labor force involved in the knowledge economy increased from 11 to 32 percent between 1900 and 1959--a monumental shift. Beyond documenting this revolution, Machlup founded the wholly new field of information economics. The transformation to a knowledge economy has resonated throughout the rest of the century, especially with the rise of the Internet. As two recent observers noted, "Information goods--from movies and music to software code and stock quotes--have supplanted industrial goods as the key drivers of world markets." Continued study of this change and its effects is testament to Fritz Machlup's pioneering work.
