The objective of NATO ARW is to assess the state of-the-art in a given scientific area and to formulate recommendations for future research in emerging areas of science by promoting international scientific contacts. In the Nafplion meeting this objective was reached by an international group of speakers, senior Greek scientists and graduates involved in relevant research areas. The Workshop was made possible by the generous support of the Scientific Council of NATO. We thank Drs. G. Sinclair and L.V. daCunha, Directors of the NATO ARW's and ASI's (Advanced Study Institutes) respectively, for their wholehearted support and advice. The International Union of Biochemistry awarded additional travel grants leading to increased international participation. Furthermore, the Secretariat of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Culture and Sciences and the National Hellenic Research Foundation contributed financially and by supporting personnel. We sincerely thank all these organizations for their support. Our heartful thanks are also extended to the Mayor of the Municipality of Nafplion, Mr.

Cooperation of Liver Cells in Health and Disease

Cooperation of Liver Cells in Health and Disease PDF Author: Z. Kmiec
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642565530
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 154

Book Description
It is only during the last decade that the functions of sinusoidal endothelial cells, Kupffer cells, hepatic stellate cells, pit cells and other intrahepatic lymphocytes have been better understood. The development of methods for isolation and co-culturing various types of liver cells has established that they communicate and cooperate via secretion of various intercellular mediators. This monograph summarizes multiple data that suggest the important role of cellular cross-talk for the functions of both normal and diseased liver. Special features of the book include concise presentation of the majority of detailed data in 19 tables. Original schemes allow for the clear illustration of complicated intercellular relationships. This is the first ever presentation of the newly emerging field of liver biology, which is important for hepatic function in health and disease and opens new avenues for therapeutic interventions.

Growth Hormone in Adults

Growth Hormone in Adults PDF Author: Anders Juul
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521641883
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 536

Book Description
This revised new edition reviews the substantial advances in our understanding of the vital role of growth hormone (GH) in maintaining adult health, and the resulting disorders from GH deficiency. The first edition, published in 1996, provided a pioneering overview of the subject; this new edition provides an even more comprehensive account, fully updated with the latest research, clinical applications, and references. The therapeutic benefits of GH treatment in GH deficiency are thoroughly evaluated, including effects on metabolism, cardiac function, exercise performance, psychosocial aspects, and aging and gender-specific effects. This compilation by the world's leading experts covers clinical investigation, diagnosis and treatment issues, and encompasses new knowledge of the control and action of GH secretion. This volume is the most authoritative, comprehensive, and detailed account available and will be an essential source of reference for all endocrinologists.

Hormone Signaling

Hormone Signaling PDF Author: Vincent Goffin
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1475736002
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 314

Book Description
Multicellular organisms require a means of intracellular communication to organize and develop the complex body plan that occurs during embryogenesis and then for cell and organ systems to access and respond to an ever changing environmental milieu. Mediators of this constant exchange of information are growth factors, neurotransmmitters, peptide and protein hormones which bind to cell surface receptors and transduce their signals from the extracellular space to the intracellular compartment. Via multiple signaling pathways, receptors of this general class affect growth, development and differentiation. Smaller hydrophobic signaling molecules, such as steroids and non-steroid hormones, vitamins and metabolic mediators interact with a large family of nuclear receptors. These receptors function as transcription factors affecting gene expression, to regulate the multiple aspects of animal and human physiology, including development, reproduction and homeostasis. The aim of this book is to cover various aspects of intracellular signaling involving hormone receptors.

Signalling from Internalised Growth Factor Receptors

Signalling from Internalised Growth Factor Receptors PDF Author: Inger Helene Madshus
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3540694943
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 190

Book Description
This book reviews knowledge on the interconnection of signal transduction and endocytosis/intracellular trafficking. The chapters cover knowledge obtained by using different model systems. The first chapter deals with Receptor Tyrosin Kinases (RTKs) with emphasis on the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGF receptor) and the Platelet Derived Growth Factor Receptor (PDGF receptor). The second chapter deals with the RTK c-Met and with how this RTK becomes carcinogenic. The third chapter reviews recent understanding on the mechanisms of action of the numerous fibroblast growth factors and their receptors. In the fourth chapter we learn about the trafficking of and signalling from the Growth Hormone Receptor and how this receptor is controlled by ubiquitination. The fifth chapter is devoted to the Interleukin II receptor, essential for activation of T cells. Links between ubiquitination, signalling, endocytosis, and sorting are reviewed. The last chapter discusses current views on how monoubiquitination controls both signalling and trafficking and thereby the final outcome of receptor activation.

Protooncogenes and Growth Factors in Steroid Hormone Induced Growth and Differentiation

Protooncogenes and Growth Factors in Steroid Hormone Induced Growth and Differentiation PDF Author: Sohaib A. Khan
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9780849386725
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 298

Book Description
Protooncogenes and Growth Factors in Steroid Hormone Induced Growth and Differentiation reviews current information regarding the complex nature of hormone-induced cell growth and differentiation. The contributors examine the emerging consensus that protooncogenes and growth factors mediate perhaps the most crucial steps leading to cell growth and differentiation. The primary objective of this book is to unite the status of current research related to protooncogenes and growth factors from diverse physiological systems to help readers gain a comprehensive understanding of the subject. Leading researchers have contributed outstanding chapters pertaining to steroid hormone-regulated cell growth and differentiation in normal and/or neoplastic tissues. This book will appeal to basic science researchers, clinicians, industrial researchers, and graduate students.
