Biochemical Thermodynamics

Biochemical Thermodynamics PDF Author: Robert A. Alberty
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 0470036451
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 482

Book Description
Navigate the complexities of biochemical thermodynamics with Mathematica(r) Chemical reactions are studied under the constraints of constant temperature and constant pressure; biochemical reactions are studied under the additional constraints of pH and, perhaps, pMg or free concentrations of other metal ions. As more intensive variables are specified, more thermodynamic properties of a system are defined, and the equations that represent thermodynamic properties as a function of independent variables become more complicated. This sequel to Robert Alberty's popular Thermodynamics of Biochemical Reactions describes how researchers will find Mathematica(r) a simple and elegant tool, which makes it possible to perform complex calculations that would previously have been impractical. Biochemical Thermodynamics: Applications of Mathematica(r) provides a comprehensive and rigorous treatment of biochemical thermodynamics using Mathematica(r) to practically resolve thermodynamic issues. Topics covered include: * Thermodynamics of the dissociation of weak acids * Apparent equilibrium constants * Biochemical reactions at specified temperatures and various pHs * Uses of matrices in biochemical thermodynamics * Oxidoreductase, transferase, hydrolase, and lyase reactions * Reactions at 298.15K * Thermodynamics of the binding of ligands by proteins * Calorimetry of biochemical reactions Because Mathematica(r) allows the intermingling of text and calculations, this book has been written in Mathematica(r) and includes a CD-ROM containing the entire book along with macros that help scientists and engineers solve their particular problems.

Far Infrared Absorption in Liquefied Gases

Far Infrared Absorption in Liquefied Gases PDF Author: Michael Christopher Jones
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Absorption spectra
Languages : en
Pages : 52

Book Description
Experimental results are given for the absorption coefficient of the liquids hydrogen (three para concentrations), nitrogen, oxygen, carbon monoxide, methane and argon in the wavenumber range 20-250/cm (40-500 milli micros). In addition, data for liquid hydrogen are given at wave numbers up to 600/cm (16.7 milli micros). The results are discussed in terms of the induced dipole, and, in the case of carbon monoxide, the permanent dipole. An indication of the way in which the data may be employed in calculations of thermal radiative transfer is made by calculation of the modified Planck mean absorption coefficient.(Author).

Microbiology of the Avian Egg

Microbiology of the Avian Egg PDF Author: R.G. Board
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 1461530601
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 187

Book Description
There is a marked and most unfortunate dichotomy in the studies of avian eggs and hence in the application of new findings in commerce. Thus over the past twenty years there has been a renewed interest in the contribu tions of various parts of an egg to embryo development. This is best illustrated by those studies that have explored the diffusion of respiratory gases across the shell and at long last have provided a fundamental definition of a previously nebulous term, porosity. The activity in this general area has led in the past four years to the publication of three major books dealing with many aspects of egg structure, function and embryogenesis. When brows ing over these books, two developments are evident. First, the advantages that are to be gained by comparative studies. Thus it is now common to see within a single book articles concerned with the eggs of a range of avian species as well as those of reptiles. Second, it is evident that zoologists and physiologists as well as those employed in large breeding firms are all contributing to an improvement of our knowledge of the egg's role in the breeding biology of birds. Comparative studies are a very uncommon feature of studies concerned with bacterial infection of eggs.

Atmospheric Radiation

Atmospheric Radiation PDF Author: R. M. Goody
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0195356101
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 536

Book Description
A complete revision of Goody's classic 1964 work, this volume offers a systematic discussion of atmospheric radiation processes that today are at the center of worldwide study and concern. It deals with the ways in which incident solar radiation is transformed into scattered and thermal radiation, and the thermodynamic consequences for the Earth's gaseous envelope, identifying aspects of the interaction between radiation and atmospheric motions as the central theme for atmospheric radiation studies. As a complete treatment of physical and mathematical foundations, the text assumes no prior knowledge of atmospheric physics. The theoretical discussion is systematic, and can therefore be applied with minor extension to any planetary atmosphere.

Synthetic Fuels from Coal

Synthetic Fuels from Coal PDF Author: United States. Interagency Task Force on Synthetic Fuels from Coal
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Coal gasification
Languages : en
Pages : 380

Book Description
This report provides a data base for Project Independence Blueprint in the area of synthetic fuels from coal. This area involves both industrial practice and a relatively large amount of advanced coal conversion technology, much of which is on an advanced pilot plant level. It must be emphasized that the report simply identifies representative resources (financial, raw materials, manpower) needed in case a decision is made to achieve given synthetic fuel production rates. The report does not suggest or imply that the resources identified herein, either financial in terms of capital or raw resources in terms of the needed coal mine capacities, are currently available. By simply identifying the critical resources, this report provides a needed data base for decision in the area of synthetic fuels.
