Avatar, Assembled

Avatar, Assembled PDF Author: Jaime Banks
Publisher: Digital Formations
ISBN: 9781433138287
Category : Avatars (Virtual reality)
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Avatar, Assembled is a curated volume that unpacks videogame and virtual world avatars--not as a monolithic phenomenon (as they are usually framed) but as sociotechnical assemblages, pieced together from social (human-like) features like voice and gesture to technical (machine-like) features like graphics and glitches. Each chapter accounts for the empirical, theoretical, technical, and popular understandings of these avatar "components"--60 in total--altogether offering a nuanced explication of avatars-as-assemblages as they matter in contemporary society and in individual experience. The volume is a "crossover" piece in that, while it delves into complex ideas, it is written in a way that will be accessible and interesting to students, researchers, designers, and practitioners alike.

My Avatar, My Self

My Avatar, My Self PDF Author: Zach Waggoner
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 0786454091
Category : Games & Activities
Languages : en
Pages : 209

Book Description
With videogames now one of the world's most popular diversions, the virtual world has increasing psychological influence on real-world players. This book examines the relationships between virtual and non-virtual identity in visual role-playing games. Utilizing James Gee's theoretical constructs of real-world identity, virtual-world identity, and projective identity, this research shows dynamic, varying and complex relationships between the virtual avatar and the player's sense of self and makes recommendations of terminology for future identity researchers.

The influence of a self-avatar on space and body perception in immersive virtual reality

The influence of a self-avatar on space and body perception in immersive virtual reality PDF Author: Ivelina Piryankova

Book Description

Avatar Bodies

Avatar Bodies PDF Author: Ann Weinstone
Publisher: U of Minnesota Press
ISBN: 9780816641468
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 227

Book Description
"Posthumanism has thus far focused nearly exclusively on human-technology relations. Avatar Bodies develops a posthumanist vocabulary for human-to-human relationships that turns our capacities for devotion, personality, and pleasure. Drawing on both the philosophies and practices of Indian Tantra, Weinstone argues for the impossibility of absolute otherness; we are all avatar bodies, consisting of undecidably shared gestures, skills, memories, sensations, beliefs, and affects.".

The Science of Avatar

The Science of Avatar PDF Author: Stephen Baxter
Publisher: Orbit
ISBN: 0316224014
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 188

Book Description
Audiences around the world have been enchanted by James Cameron's visionary Avatar, with its glimpse of the Na'vi on the marvelous world of Pandora. But the movie is not entirely a fantasy; there is a scientific rationale for much of what we saw on the screen, from the possibility of travel to other worlds, to the life forms seen on screen and the ecological and cybernetic concepts that underpin the 'neural networks' in which the Na'vi and their sacred trees are joined, as well as to the mind-linking to the avatars themselves. From popular science journalist and acclaimed science fiction author Stephen Baxter, The Science of Avatar is a guide to the rigorous fact behind the fiction. It will enhance the readers' enjoyment of the movie experience by drawing them further into its imagined world.

The Palgrave Handbook of Popular Culture as Philosophy

The Palgrave Handbook of Popular Culture as Philosophy PDF Author: Dean A. Kowalski
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3031246853
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 2127

Book Description
Much philosophical work on pop culture apologises for its use; using popular culture is a necessary evil, something merely useful for reaching the masses with important philosophical arguments. But works of pop culture are important in their own right--they shape worldviews, inspire ideas, change minds. We wouldn't baulk at a book dedicated to examining the philosophy of The Great Gatsby or 1984--why aren't Star Trek and Superman fair game as well? After all, when produced, the former were considered pop culture just as much as the latter. This will be the first major reference work to right that wrong, gathering together entries on film, television, games, graphic novels and comedy, and officially recognizing the importance of the field. It will be the go-to resource for students and researchers in philosophy, culture, media and communications, English and history and will act as a springboard to introduce the reader to the other key literature in the field.
