Bilingual Books

Bilingual Books PDF Author: Raymonde Sneddon
Publisher: Trentham Books Limited
ISBN:
Category : Bilingual books
Languages : en
Pages : 188

Book Description
This fascinating study shows how young children work simultaneously in two languages to decode unfamiliar text, negotiate meaning and explore the differences between their languages. Set in the context of current research and practice in relation to multiliteracy, personal and learner identity, and issues in translation, the book explores dual language books and their use since the 1980s. Developed from action research work by primary teachers, the book follows seven children aged 6 to 10 as they use dual language storybooks to learn to read in Albanian, Urdu, Turkish, French and Gujerati, with the help of their mothers or their friends. Teachers, parents and researchers will find the book invaluable. It explores the nature and benefits of biliteracy and offers ideas and strategies for teaching young children languages, whether by developing their bilingualism or teaching them new ones.

Language Impairment in Multilingual Settings PDF Author: Sharon Armon-Lotem
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing Company
ISBN: 9027258910
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 341

Book Description
COST Action IS0804 “Language Impairment in a Multilingual Society: Linguistic Patterns and the Road to Assessment” aimed to profile bilingual specific language impairment (biSLI) by establishing a network for research on the linguistic and cognitive abilities of bilingual children with SLI across different migrant communities. A battery of tools for Language Impairment Testing in Multilingual Settings (LITMUS) was designed within the Action to achieve these aims, including the Parental Bilingual Questionnaire, the Sentence Repetition Task, the Crosslinguistic Lexical Tasks, the Multilingual Assessment Instrument for Narratives, and two nonword repetition tasks that are not language-specific. The chapters in this volume present research on one or more of the LITMUS tasks in bilingual children with typical language development and on use of the LITMUS testing battery for identifying possible language impairment. The work presented here will be of interest for researchers and clinicians alike, and have profound impact in our understanding of bilingual language development and impairment.

Languages in Action

Languages in Action PDF Author: Marinela Burada
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1527526976
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 367

Book Description
This book includes a selection of papers in linguistics presented at the 14th Conference on British and American Studies. Its tripartite structure reflects the main topics around which the nineteen contributions cluster. The first part, “Native language profiling: explorations and findings”, displays a variety of methodological approaches aimed at highlighting syntactic, morphological, and lexico-semantic aspects of, primarily, English and Romanian. The papers in the second section, “Aspects of language change, bilingualism, and cross-linguistic variation”, bring to the fore some of the topical issues falling within the ambit of language contact, such as mixed languages, bilingualism, and code-switching, as well as contrastive investigations of language structure. The research strand in the final part, “Meaning and communication within and across cultures”, relates to lexico-pragmatic inquiries into the construction of meaning, focusing on the “language beyond language”, as well as on the extent to which the lexical and pragmatic repertoires of various languages can be made to overlap.

Bilingualism and Deafness

Bilingualism and Deafness PDF Author: Carolina Plaza-Pust
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 1501504991
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 522

Book Description
This book examines sociolinguistic, educational and psycholinguistic factors that shape the path to sign bilingualism in deaf individuals and contributes to a better understanding of the specific characteristics of a type of bilingualism that is neither territorial nor commonly the result of parent-to-child transmission. The evolution of sign bilingualism at the individual level is discussed from a developmental linguistics perspective on the basis of a longitudinal investigation of deaf learners' bilingual acquisition of German sign language (DGS) and German. The case studies included in this volume offer unique insights into bilingual deaf learners’ sign language and written language productions, and the sophisticated nature of the bilingual competence they attain. Commonalities and differences between sign bilingual language development in deaf learners and language development in other language acquisition scenarios are identified on the basis of a dynamic model of change in the evolution of (learner) language, with a focus on the role of language contact in the organisation of multilingual knowledge and the scope of inter- and intra-individual variation in learner grammars. In many respects, as becomes apparent throughout the chapters of this work, sign bilingualism represents not only a challenge but also a resource. Given this cross-disciplinary perspective, the insights on bilingualism and deafness in this volume will be of interest to a wide range of researchers and professionals.
