China Coup PDF Author: Roger Garside
Publisher: Univ of California Press
ISBN: 0520391705
Category : Fiction

Pages : 256

Book Description
An expert’s take on how a coup in China could launch a transition to democracy. This short book predicts—contrary to the prevailing consensus—that China’s leader Xi Jinping will very soon be removed from office in a coup d’état mounted by rivals in the top leadership. The leaders of the coup will then end China’s one-party dictatorship and launch a transition to democracy and the rule of law. Long-time diplomat and development banker Roger Garside draws on his deep knowledge of Chinese politics and economics first to develop a detailed scenario of how these events may unfold, and then—in the main body of the book—to explain why. His gripping, persuasive account of how Chinese leaders plot and plan away from the public eye is unique in published literature. Garside argues that under Xi’s overconfident leadership, China is on a collision course with an America that is newly awakened out of complacency. As Xi’s rivals look abroad, they are alarmed that he is blind to the reactions that China’s actions have provoked from the world’s strongest power and its allies. In domestic affairs, Xi’s rivals recognize that economic and social change without political reform have created problems that require not just new leaders but a new system of government. Security abroad and stability at home demand a revolution to which Xi is implacably opposed. To save China—and themselves—from catastrophe, they must remove him and end the dictatorship he is determined to defend. But their will and capacity to do so depend crucially on how liberal democracies act. Garside’s scenario shows America leading its allies in creating the conditions in which Xi’s rivals move against him.

ISBN: 9781450286640
Category : History

Pages : 316

Book Description
Many people think that the massacre at Tiananmen Square was a complete victory for the communists in charge of China, but history proves that is not the case. Chan Kai Yee, who suffered through the Cultural Revolution while Mao Zedong ruled China with an iron fist, describes how elite intellectuals prepared to fight back. His profound knowledge of history and close contacts with key dissenters give him an unmatched perspective on events, which culminated with the protests in Tiananmen Square in 1989. Thousands of people died in the Tiananmen Square massacre; while the Communist Party ostensibly remained in power, their leading members start to worry. The massacre helped reformers overcome the resistance of stalwart conservatives who previously would not budge from their positions. Gradually, talented intellectuals began to mount a silent, peaceful coup d état to seize control of the country. With intellectuals running the country, China became a dominant world power that could surpass the United States. Discover how a band of intellectuals transformed a nation and the world in Tiananmen s Tremendous Achievements.

Thailand's Post-Coup Relations with China and America

Thailand's Post-Coup Relations with China and America PDF Author: Ian Storey
Publisher:
ISBN: 9789814695701
Category : China
Languages : en
Pages : 36

Book Description
Since the Thai military seized power in May 2014, Thailand's relations with the United States have significantly deteriorated, while the Peoples Republic of China (PRC) has quickly emerged as the Kingdom's closest Great Power partner. U.S.-Thai defence cooperation has been the main casualty of the coup, and represents a setback for the Obama administration's pivot or rebalance towards Asia, the success of which depends in large part on strengthening bilateral alliances and increasing America's presence in Asia. Even before the coup, the U.S.-Thai alliance was facing difficulties. Since Washington announced the pivot in 2011, neither civilian nor military leaders in Thailand have evinced genuine support for the strategy. Many Thais consider the pivot to be aimed at containing China, and that Thailand's association with the strategy would be detrimental to the country's positive relations with the PRC. Thailand does not perceive the PRC as a source of strategic instability; to the contrary, Thais overwhelmingly view China as a valuable economic and security partner. In contrast to U.S.-Thai relations, Sino-Thai relations have blossomed since the putsch. Beijing's hands off approach to Thailand's domestic political situation is much appreciated by the junta, and has allowed the two sides to focus on strengthening economic ties and defence cooperation. The United States has repeatedly called on the junta to hold new elections, and emphasized that relations cannot return to normal until civilian rule is restored. However, a return to democracy in Thailand is not in prospect any time soon. The rejection of the draft constitution in September 2015 means that the armed forces will retain political power until at least 2017 and conceivably beyond. As a result, U.S.-Thai relations will continue to experience strain while Sino-Thai cooperation strengthens.

The Sian Incident

The Sian Incident PDF Author: Tien-wei Wu
Publisher: University of Michigan Press
ISBN: 0472902148
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 305

Book Description
When Chiang Kai-shek arrived at Sian in the fall of 1936 and laid plans for launching his last campaign against the Red Army with an expectation of exterminating it in a month, he badly misjudged the mood of the Tungpei (Northeast) Army and more so its leader, Chang Hsueh-liang, better known as the Young Marshal. Refusing to fight the Communists, Chang with the loyal support of his officers staged a coup d’état by kidnapping Chiang Kai-shek for two weeks at Sian. Almost forty years after the melodrama was over, the Sian Incident still absorbs much attention from both Chinese and Western scholars as well as the reading public. The Sian Incident attempts to bring together whatever information has been thus far gleaned about the subject, and to cover all aspects and controversies involved in it. [1, xi, xii]
