Higher Education in Asia

Higher Education in Asia PDF Author: UNESCO Institute for Statistics
Publisher: United Nations Education, Scientific & Cultural Organization
ISBN:
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 168

Book Description
As demand for tertiary education continues to rise across Asia, countries are expanding their higher education systems outwards by constructing new universities, hiring more faculty and encouraging private provision. Many of these systems are also moving upwards by introducing new graduate programmes to ensure that there are enough qualified professors and researchers for the future. Based on data from the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) and a diverse range of national and international sources, this report provides a comprehensive view to evaluate different strategies to expand graduate education. Special focus is given to middle-income countries in the region which have recently experienced the most dramatic growth through an innovative mix of policies. For example, interventions aimed at improving university rankings may be controversial but are nonetheless reshaping university reforms. The report highlights the pros and cons by comparing the three most commonly-used university ranking systems. Across the region, countries are not simply seeking to accommodate more students - they are striving to build top-quality universities that can produce the research and workforce needed for national economic development. So this report presents a range of data to better evaluate the economic benefits flowing from university research, as well as the spillover effects to the private sector. The authors also analyse the ways in which international collaboration can boost the productivity and quality of university-based research. Overall, this report provides the data and analysis to help countries weigh the balance of different policies to expand their higher education systems.

Transnational Higher Education in Asia and the Pacific Region

Transnational Higher Education in Asia and the Pacific Region PDF Author: Futao Huang
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Education, Higher
Languages : en
Pages : 186

Book Description
This volume is mainly concerned with transnational higher education in some selected countries in Asia and the Pacific region. Compared with other parts of the world, especially since the 1990s, there has been a rapid development of transnational higher education in this area. Issues concerning importing and exporting higher education activities or services have become one of the major debates in higher education reforms in many countries and regions at both policy and institutional levels. In a major sense, Asia and the Pacific region is the most important and active area in which transnational higher education has occurred. Moreover, policies and strategies concerning transnational higher education in many countries and areas in Asia and the Pacific region have recently gained increased attention and visibility. Though there exists a vast diversity in the selected countries and regions, this volume has been designed to address four of the shared major research questions. First, what is the context, rationale, or driving force for development of transnational higher education in each of the individual case studies? Second, what policies or regulations, if any, concerning transnational higher education exist in the selected countries? And if there are any, what are they? Third, what are the current circumstances, issues, characteristics and general trends of transnational higher education in these case studies? Finally, what outcomes or effects have been brought about by developments in transnational higher education? These eight case studies were selected so as to provide a variety of examples of development of transnational higher education in this region. [Author abstract, ed].

Internationalization of Higher Education in East Asia

Internationalization of Higher Education in East Asia PDF Author: Ka-Ho Mok
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134715005
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 219

Book Description
The rise in demand for higher education in the Asia-Pacific region is an undeniable reflection of the growing pace of globalization and the subsequent pressures imposed by it. Aspiring to become globally competitive and to position favourably in the global university league tables, governments in Asia have either engaged in a serious quest to become a regional education hub or they have concentrated on developing transnational higher education to create more opportunities, in order to meet their citizens’ pressing demand for higher education. Internationalization of Higher Education in East Asia critically examines and provides comparative perspectives on the major strategies that selected Asian countries and societies have adopted to transform their higher education sector and enhance their national competitiveness in the increasingly globalized world. This volume by leading scholars in the field of education development and policy studies makes critical reflections on how Asian governments in particular and universities in general have responded to the growing challenges of globalization by promoting more internationalization, student mobility and entrepreneurship in higher education. This book is an essential collection for policy makers, researchers and postgraduate students studying higher education, Asian education and international education.

Crossing Borders in East Asian Higher Education

Crossing Borders in East Asian Higher Education PDF Author: David W. Chapman
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400704461
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 388

Book Description
This book examines issues that have emerged as higher education systems and individual institutions across East Asia confront and adapt to the changing economic, social, and educational environments in which they now operate. The book’s focus is on how higher education systems learn from each other and on the ways in which they collaborate to address new challenges. The sub-theme that runs through this volume concerns the changing nature of cross-border sharing. In particular, the provision of technical assistance by more industrialized countries to lower and middle income countries has given way to collaborations that place the latter’s participating institutions on a more equal footing.

A Comparative Analysis of Higher Education Systems PDF Author:
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9462095337
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 234

Book Description
"This is a well crafted, timely book that comes at a time when so much is happening in higher education contexts across the world. Clearly, it is in response to these global (and selectively local) trends that Kariwo, Gounko and Nungu bring together an impressive lineup of both established and emerging scholars who achieve a comprehensive and critically constructed perspective on tertiary education systems. Collectively, the chapters in this work shall expand the epistemic boundaries of the area and its affiliated disciplines, and the book as a whole will greatly benefit interested scholars, students, education policy makers and the public at large. " - Ali A. Abdi, Professor, University of Alberta
