The Principles of Rhetoric

The Principles of Rhetoric PDF Author: Elizabeth H. Spalding
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781331745310
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 286

Book Description
Excerpt from The Principles of Rhetoric: With Constructive and Critical Work in Composition "The art of instruction for the secondary school," it has been said, "may be summed up in one sentence: Inspire enthusiastic activity." It is not enough, however, to inspire such activity; provision for its proper exercise must be made. The material that forms the basis of this book was collected in my own classes during a period of years, for the purpose of arousing and satisfying the pupils interest and activity with reference to rhetoric and composition. Later, at the request of teachers, the material was put into the form of a book. That the book might meet general conditions in the classroom, it was submitted before its publication to able instructors and critics, teachers of English in a number of widely separated centres. Their suggestions were valuable, and are incorporated in the book as published. Because many text-books already in use contain admirable presentations of rhetorical principles, with exercises on some of them and with lists of composition subjects, ' it is by no means unnecessary for the author of a new rhetoric to state what differentiates his work from other books on the same subject. Heuristic Rhetoric

Heuristic Rhetoric PDF Author: Gábor Tahin
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030984826
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 226

Book Description
This book introduces a novel approach to the analysis and practice of persuasive speaking and writing: heuristic rhetoric. The new method has evolved to fulfil the need at universities, government departments, political organisations, business enterprises and other public institutions for a modern practical alternative to classical rhetoric, which is, in the author’s view, no longer capable of giving a complete description of contemporary, predominantly mediatised, forms of public persuasive discourse, whilst other competing disciplines, such as critical discourse analysis or strategic manoeuvring, have not yet produced a set of tools, which have the comprehensive nature and practical orientation of Classical Greek and Roman rhetorical system. The book expounds heuristic rhetoric as an inter-disciplinary method to develop advanced skills of critical and strategic reasoning. Applying a novel set of principles for the strategic analysis of persuasive reasoning in complex rhetorical situations, the method emphasizes preparing and continuously adjusting argumentation according to the demands of unpredictable circumstances.
