Creatures of the Air

Creatures of the Air PDF Author: J.Q. Davies
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 0226826147
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 291

Book Description
An account of nineteenth-century music in Atlantic worlds told through the history of the art’s elemental medium, the air. Often experienced as universal and incorporeal, music seems an innocent art form. The air, the very medium by which music constitutes itself, shares with music a claim to invisibility. In Creatures of the Air, J. Q. Davies interrogates these claims, tracing the history of music’s elemental media system in nineteenth-century Atlantic worlds. He posits that air is a poetic domain, and music is an art of that domain. From West Central African ngombi harps to the European J. S. Bach revival, music expressed elemental truths in the nineteenth century. Creatures of the Air tells these truths through stories about suffocation and breathing, architecture and environmental design, climate strife, and racial turmoil. Contributing to elemental media studies, the energy humanities, and colonial histories, Davies shows how music, no longer just an innocent luxury, is implicated in the struggle for control over air as a precious natural resource. What emerges is a complex political ecology of the global nineteenth century and beyond.

William MacGillivray

William MacGillivray PDF Author: Robert Ralph
Publisher: Merrell
ISBN:
Category : Animals in art
Languages : en
Pages : 136

Book Description
"In 1830 in Edinburgh a meeting occurred that was to lay the foundations of ornithology in Britain and the United States. John James Audubon was a famous American naturalist and bird artist, looking for an assistant to transcribe his notes; William MacGillivray was an obscure teacher and journalist, obsessed by the natural world and determined to make his name in ornithology. The two men formed a friendship that led to ten frantic years of writing, painting and travelling, culminating in the publication of MacGillivray's masterwork, A History of British Birds. He never recovered from the hostile critical reception the first volumes of the work received, and, lonely and depressed after Audubon's return to America, he spent the last years of his life teaching and reviewing. He lived just long enough to see the publication of the final volume of his life's work." "Today MacGillivray is celebrated by many as one of the first ecologists, while A History of British Birds in many ways anticipates Darwin's The Origin of Species. His illustrations were among the first to show wild animals and birds as living creatures inhabiting their own environment, rather than as dead specimens, and their delicacy and accuracy ensure that his work is at least the equal of the more famous Audubon's. This beautifully designed book is the first fully illustrated treatment of MacGillivray's art, restoring him to his rightful place at the forefront of natural history artists."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Lesser Living Creatures of the Renaissance

Lesser Living Creatures of the Renaissance PDF Author: Keith Botelho
Publisher: Penn State Press
ISBN: 0271094656
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 227

Book Description
Lesser Living Creatures examines literary and cultural texts from early modern England in order to understand how people in that era thought about—and with—insect and arachnid life. The conversations in this two-volume set address the collaborative, multigenerational research that produced early modern natural history and provide new insights into the old question of what it means to be human in a world populated by beasts large and small. Volume 2, Concepts, explores ideas that cut across species, insect and otherwise, both building on and invigorating critical vocabularies developed over nearly two decades of early modern animal studies. The contributors explore topics such as the medical and culinary consumption of insects; extermination campaigns; the auditory and emotive effects of a swarm; insects and politics; and notions of infestation, stinging, and creeping. Throughout, they illuminate how early modern science and literature worked as intersecting systems of knowledge production about the natural world and show definitively how insect life was, and remains, intimately entangled with human life. In addition to the editors, contributors to this volume include Lucinda Cole, Frances E. Dolan, Lowell Duckert, Andrew Fleck, Rebecca Laroche, Jennifer Munroe, Amy L. Tigner, Jessica Lynn Wolfe, Derek Woods, and Julian Yates.
