Book Description
This is a spectacular debut trying to puzzle though our present, from the workplace to the pop charts but most of all to the politics of struggle. The latest in AK's Commune Editions imprint, Cruel Fiction brings together new material with celebrated work published here for the first time in book form, including the provocative and charged 'Brazilian Is Not a Race', a sonnet sequence meditating on race, nation, and history seen from the author's native Rio Grande Valley; it also includes the widely-circulated '128-131', a caustic, hilarious, tender account memorialising three days in jail during the Occupy movement.

The Analogical Reader

The Analogical Reader PDF Author: Peter Dixon
Publisher:
ISBN: 1009344161
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 270

Book Description
Perspective taking is a critical component of approaches to literature and narrative, but there is no coherent, broadly applicable, and process-based account of what it is and how it occurs. This book provides a multidisciplinary coverage of the topic, weaving together key insights from different disciplines into a comprehensive theory of perspective taking in literature and in life. The essential insight is that taking a perspective requires constructing an analogy between one's own personal knowledge and experience and that of the perspective taking target. This analysis is used to reassess a broad swath of research in mind reading and literary studies. It develops the dynamics of how analogy is used in perspective taking and the challenges that must be overcome under some circumstances. New empirical evidence is provided in support of the theory, and numerous examples from popular and literary fiction are used to illustrate the concepts. Cruel Children in Popular Texts and Cultures

Cruel Children in Popular Texts and Cultures PDF Author: Monica Flegel
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319722751
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 312

Book Description
This book explores how alarmist social discourses about 'cruel' young people fail to recognize the complexity of cruelty and the role it plays in child agency. Examining representations of cruel young people in popular texts and popular culture, the collected essays demonstrate how gender, race, and class influence who gets labeled 'cruel' and which actions are viewed as negative, aggressive, and disruptive. It shows how representations of cruel young people negotiate the violence that shadows polite society, and how narratives of cruelty and aggression are used to affirm, or to deny, young people’s agency.

Pop with Gods, Shakespeare, and AI

Pop with Gods, Shakespeare, and AI PDF Author: Iris H. Tuan
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 9811572976
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 226

Book Description
Applying the theories of Popular Culture, Visual Culture, Performance Studies, (Post)Feminism, and Film Studies, this interdisciplinary and well-crafted book leads you to the fascinating and intriguing world of popular film, (musical) theatre, and TV drama. It explores the classical and contemporary cases of the literature works, both Eastern and Western, adapted, represented and transformed into the interesting artistic medium in films, performances, TV dramas, musicals, and AI robot theatre/films. ‘Iris Tuan’s book is wide ranging in scope and diversity, examining theatre, music, film and television productions from both Western and Asian countries. Tuan also surveys an extensive range of critical and theoretical perspectives, especially from performance studies and popular cultural studies, to offer context for her descriptions of the many different works. Some of her examples are well-known (Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, Disney’s The Lion King) while others little known outside their place of origin (such as the Hakka Theatre of Taiwan) -- all are approached by the author with enthusiasm.’ —Susan Bennett, Professor of English, University of Calgary, Canada ‘Tuan takes us through multiple examples of contemporary popular performance in theatre/film/TV ranging from "high" art sources (Shakespeare or Journey to the West in films, Hirata's robotic theatre experiments) to "low" (Taiwanese TV soap operas Hakka Theatre: Roseki and Story of Yangxi Palace, Korean film Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds). The reader moves at a speed-dating pace through contemporary culture production and interpretive theories, encountering significant works, controversies (i. e., yellow face), and conundrums selected from China, Korea, Japan and the U. S. and filtered through a Taiwanese female gaze.’ —Kathy Foley, Professor of Theatre Arts, University of California Santa Cruz, USA
