This reader is intended as a theoretical, analytical and historical introduction to the study of popular culture within cultural studies. It is divided into seven representative sections. The first six sections each contain a selection of readings from a particular approach to popular culture: culture and civilisation tradition; culturalism; structuralism and post-structuralism; Marxism; feminism; and postmodernism, providing a comprehensive overview and examples of the main theoretical perspectives. The final section contains readings from recent debates within the study of popular culture. Together, these sections chart the theoretical development of the study of popular culture within cultural studies, and provide examples of the analysis of the texts and practices of popular culture within each specific tradition. Book Description
The concise introduction to the study of popular culture From Madonna and drag queens to cyberpunk and webzines, popular culture constitutes a common and thereby critical part of our lives. Freccero places rap music, the Alien Trilogy and Sandra Cisneros in the context of postcolonialism, identity politics, and technoculture to show students how they can draw on their already existing literacies and on the cultures they know in order to think critically.Complete with a glossary of useful terms, a sample syllabus and extensive bibliography, this book is the concise introduction to the study of popular culture.

Cultural Legal Studies

Cultural Legal Studies PDF Author: Cassandra Sharp
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317626257
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 304

Book Description
What can law’s popular cultures do for law, as a constitutive and interrogative critical practice? This collection explores such a question through the lens of the ‘cultural legal studies’ movement, which proffers a new encounter with the ‘cultural turn’ in law and legal theory. Moving beyond the ‘law ands’ (literature, humanities, culture, film, visual and aesthetics) on which it is based, this book demonstrates how the techniques and practices of cultural legal studies can be used to metamorphose law and the legalities that underpin its popular imaginary. By drawing on three different modes of cultural legal studies – storytelling, technology and jurisprudence – the collection showcases the intersectional practices of cultural legal studies, and law in its popular cultural mode. The contributors to the collection deploy differentiated modes of cultural legal studies practice, adopting diverse philosophical, disciplinary, methodological and theoretical approaches and subjects of examination. The collection draws on this mix of diversity and homogeneity to thread together its overarching theme: that we must take seriously an interrogation of law as culture and in its cultural form. That is, it does not ask how a text ‘represents’ law; but rather how the representational nature of both law and culture intersect so that the ‘juridical’ become visible in various cultural manifestations. In short, it asks: how law’s popular cultures actively effect the metamorphosis of law.
