Deep in Our Hearts PDF Author: Joan C. Browning
Publisher: University of Georgia Press
ISBN: 9780820324197
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 426

Book Description
Deep in Our Hearts is an eloquent and powerful book that takes us into the lives of nine young women who came of age in the 1960s while committing themselves actively and passionately to the struggle for racial equality and justice. These compelling first-person accounts take us back to one of the most tumultuous periods in our nation’s history--to the early days of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), the Albany Freedom Ride, voter registration drives and lunch counter sit-ins, Freedom Summer, the 1964 Democratic Convention, and the rise of Black Power and the women’s movement. The book delves into the hearts of the women to ask searching questions. Why did they, of all the white women growing up in their hometowns, cross the color line in the days of segregation and join the Southern Freedom Movement? What did they see, do, think, and feel in those uncertain but hopeful days? And how did their experiences shape the rest of their lives?

From the Depths of Our Hearts

From the Depths of Our Hearts PDF Author: Pope Benedict XVI
Publisher: Ignatius Press
ISBN: 1621644146
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 150

Book Description
"The priesthood is going through a dark time", according to Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI and Robert Cardinal Sarah. "Wounded by the revelation of so many scandals, disconcerted by the constant questioning of their consecrated celibacy, many priests are tempted by the thought of giving up and abandoning everything." In this book, the pope emeritus and the prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments give their brother priests, and the whole Church, a message of hope. They honestly address the spiritual challenges faced by priests today, while pointing to deeper conversion to Jesus Christ as the key to faithful and fruitful priestly ministry and genuine reform. Benedict XVI and Cardinal Sarah "fraternally offer these reflections to the people of God and, of course, in a spirit of filial obedience, to Pope Francis", who has said, "I think that celibacy is a gift for the Church. . . . I don't agree with allowing optional celibacy, no." Responding to calls for refashioning the priesthood, including proposals from participants in the Amazonian Synod, two wise, spiritually astute pastors explain the importance of priestly celibacy for the good of the whole Church. Drawing on Vatican II, they present celibacy as not just "a mere precept of ecclesiastical law", but as a sharing in Jesus' sacrifice on the Cross and his identity as Bridegroom of the Church.

Book Description
Peace begins with us! When the world is at its most threatening and uncertainty reigns, it comforts us to know that mindful living is still within our grasp. Peace in Our Hearts, Peace in the World helps us come to a full and deep understanding of our own thoughts, actions, limitations, and strengths--and the effect they have on the world at large. Ruth Fishel serves as our wonderfully effective guide through this year-long journey of introspection, reflection, and resolution. Her daily encouragement to appreciate the most basic things in life--waking up, brushing our teeth, the breaths we take--alternate with thoughts on relationships, choice, and personal responsibility. A thought-provoking quote accompanies each meditation: Fishel draws these wise words from sources old and new, ranging from Buddhism to new spiritual writings by Eckhart Tolle, Christina Feldman, and Deepak Chopra. Small enough to travel with, and beautifully designed, this book makes inspirational reading available anytime, anywhere. Readers will find its comforting presence a constant reminder of the maxim that drives this motivational collection: if there is peace in our hearts, there may indeed one day be peace in the world.

Setting Our Hearts upon the Deep

Setting Our Hearts upon the Deep PDF Author: Henry L. Novello
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1666752916
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 285

Book Description
In Christian churches, the “Why Lord?” and “How long Lord?” prayers of the Jewish lament tradition have fallen silent. This is astonishing given that Jesus’ fidelity to the cause of God culminates in his lament cry on Calvary, which was “heard” by God (Heb 5:7), who did not hide his face (Ps 22:24) but responded by raising him up in glory. In Christ’s paschal mystery, grief (lament) and joy (praise) are inextricably intertwined. So why is lament not incorporated into praise in church usage? How can we not lament as we strive to embody Christ in an unredeemed world? The book examines reasons for the neglect of lament in the New Testament and theological tradition. The pivotal section of the work situates Jesus in the tradition of the suffering righteous in which Psalm 22 stands and it proposes a theological (not juridical) interpretation of Jesus’ cry, which refutes the God-abandonment thesis: Jesus’ cry reveals his abandonment to God, not his abandonment by God! Because God was “for” and “with” Jesus, we know that God is “for” and “with” us in our own cries, which are joined to Jesus’ cry, and we are redeemed. Redemption, then, consists in human and divine suffering coming together to transform grief and evil into joy and newness of life.

Bringing Bernard Lonergan Down to Earth and into Our Hearts and Communities PDF Author: John Raymaker
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1532657951
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 208

Book Description
Bernard Lonergan is a world-renowned philosopher, methodologist, and theologian. The complexity of his work has tended to limit his accessibility to average readers. Bringing Bernard Lonergan Down to Earth seeks to remedy this limitation by showing how Lonergan did address problems of community life. He also broadened his interest after writing Insight to include a reaching into our hearts as modeled, for example, by the genius Blaise Pascal. Lonergan also sought to bridge religious divides. Here the Christian theological virtues of faith, hope, and love are indispensable but that does not curtail from Lonergan's uncanny ability to reach out to secularists by focusing on ethics. The importance of Lonergan's interdisciplinary work is signaled in the book's twelve explorations (in the concluding Part IV) that detail for interested readers his extraordinary ability to solve major philosophical issues.
