From Indifference to Entrapment

From Indifference to Entrapment PDF Author: Norbert Both
Publisher: Amsterdam University Press
ISBN: 9789053564530
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 274

Book Description
A detailed analysis of the response to the Yugoslav crisis by one of America's key allies in NATO. The author focuses on the question of how a Western bureaucracy faced up to the most complex foreign policy challenge of the 1990s. The Netherlands, as a 'pocket-sized medium power', is an interesting case study. While the margins for Dutch foreign policy are limited, fate had it that the Netherlands occupied the European presidency during the second half of 1991, when the recognition issue divided the West and the parameters for the subsequent international intervention in the Balkans were set. By July 1995, the involvement of the Netherlands had deepened to the extent that Dutch troops who found themselves trapped in the UN safe area of Srebrenica together with the local Muslim population were unable to prevent the worst massacre in Europe since the Second World War. This study is based on interviews with all the major players, including two former Defence Ministers and two former Ministers of Foreign Affairs, and on documents from the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made available under the country's own 'freedom of information act'.

Entrapment Neuropathy of the Lumbar Spine and Lower Limbs PDF Author: Toyohiko Isu
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 9813362049
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 125

Book Description
This book presents the latest information on the epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of peripheral nerve entrapment neuropathy, focusing on the lumbar spine and the lower limbs. The book is divided into three thematic sections, on para-lumbar spine disease, lower limb entrapment neuropathy, and comprehensive reviews. In addition to exploring the latest advances, it also features short essays by the Editor that provide valuable insights into the disease. Though neuropathy of the upper limbs has been studied in detail and substantial evidence is available, there are very few books on para-lumbar spine and lower limb entrapment neuropathy. Often, the symptoms are misdiagnosed as lumbar spine disease, overlooked, or treated as failed back surgery syndrome. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the disease and shares the latest findings from the last 10 years of research into its diagnosis and treatment, offering essential guidance for general clinicians, spinal surgeons and neurosurgeon who treat numbness and pain in the lower limbs and lower back. It will also benefit young doctors interested in the field, nurses, therapists and patients

Entrapment in Escalating Conflicts

Entrapment in Escalating Conflicts PDF Author: J. Brockner
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461250722
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 275

Book Description
It was just over 12 years ago that we first sat down together to talk about psychological traps. In the relative calm of late afternoons, feet draped casually over the seedy furnishings of the Tufts psychology department, we entertained each other with personal anecdotes about old cars, times spent lost on hold, and the Shakespearean concerns of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, Lord and Lady Macbeth, and other notables. Eventually, informed by our many illustrations and the excitement that their repeated telling engendered in the two of us, we began to move more formally into trap analysis. How do you know a trap when you see one? What are the shared characteristics of all psychological traps, regardless of origin, scope, or complexity? What are the key conceptual elements in any effort to differentiate among the traps of the world? What factors make us more or less apt to fall prey to entrapment? These were some of the questions that arose during these initial meetings. A series of weekly meetings stretched over the ensuing years-interrupted temporarily by various exigencies-and led eventually to a research program that grew to involve a number of students and faculty colleagues. At the time, of course, we did not regard our work as a "research program"; rather, even as our experiments proceeded to answer two burning questions at a time, they managed to raise three or four new issues that we had not anticipated before.
