Book Description
True stories, told and written by the current and retired former Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). This book is dedicated to the three FBI Special Agents that were killed on August 9, 1979, and their families, as well as 33 other FBI Special Agents who died as a direct result of an adversarial action throughout the FBI's history to date. It is also dedicated to the countless families of both active and retired Agents, who exemplified the Fidelity -Bravery - Integrity that the FBI men and women represent. Throughout human history, man has recorded events, whether in written form, by word of mouth, or electronically. These recordings were made to tell a story, to preserve history, to teach and enlighten future generations about life. This book was written to do all of the above, with stories that are part of the FBI's history. The book contains hundreds of true stories, written by hundreds of current and retired FBI Special Agents. I, as an author, am merely a messenger that put together all the stories, including mine. The author was born in a small village in Slovenia, which at that time was one of the republics of Yugoslavia, a communist country in Eastern Europe. Slovenia is now an independent country and a member of NATO. Author left Slovenia at the age of eleven, with his mother, and arrived in the U.S. on Thanksgiving Day, 1956. He was reunited with his father for the first time in eleven years, as his father left the communist country or face a certain death, when the youngster was three months old. Following graduation from John Carroll University in 1967, and ROTC commitment, author became a Cleveland, Ohio police officer, followed by service as a U.S. Army officer during the Vietnam War. In 1970, upon completion of the FBI Academy, author was sworn in as an FBI Special Agent, given credentials, a badge and a gun and started his 32 years of public service in the FBI. Stories in the book were collected during the 32 years on duty and the 12 years of retirement. Additional stories are being collected and will be published in the next book, God willing. Yes, FBI Special Agents are real people, who have left various jobs, to pursue a dream and a daily challenge in a career serving human beings. We are special, because we put our lives on the line every day to protect those that we have sworn to serve. We reflect the society around us. Our backgrounds are as varied as the people that we serve and protect. We have feelings, we cry and we laugh. We are shot at and we shoot as a last resort. We bleed and we die. We leave for work carrying a gun, a set of credentials and a badge, not knowing if we will return to our loved ones alive in one piece, at the end of the day. We are saints and we are sinners. The split-second decisions that we have to make at times may haunt us, as attorneys rehash our actions for years after their occurrence. These decisions may make the difference whether we will be judged by twelve or carried by six. All of us hope and pray, that our actions will be just and correct and we will make it home to our loving families. Many of the stories that are contained in this book will be labeled by some readers as being politically incorrect, provocative, racist and sexist. None of the stories are meant to offend you. Believe me, the stories are real and they deal with life (and death) in the real world that all of us live in today.

Book Description
HE WAS A FLASHY, HIGH-ROLLING CON MAN…A MILITANT STREET HUSTLER…A FRONT MAN FOR THE MOB… On TV and in the movies, FBI undercover agents are a dime a dozen. But in reality, only an elite handful have the unique combination of wit, instinct and daring to work these highly dangerous scams. For 10 years, Larry Wansley was one of them. A former detective bureau commander with the Compton, California, police department, Wansley graduated from the FBI Academy in 1973. After nabbing a Texas bank robber, he went underground in Los Angeles as part of the bureau’s massive search for Patty Hearst. Then came the big sting: Operation Tarpit with another agent to play his high-living partner in crime—and the unwitting help of two talkative hookers—Wansley, called “Mandrake” by his fellow agents, set up a two-year, L.A.-based operation that netted 300 phony stock and bond dealers, truck hijackers, kidnappers, gun-runners, and killers, and recovered $42 million in stolen property. From there, Wansley moved coast-to-coast, working his scams on redneck southern crime bosses, kiddie porn producers, New York Mafia wiseguys, and more—and living each day with the heart-stopping knowledge that one wrong move meant death…

Special Agent Man

Special Agent Man PDF Author: Steve Moore
Publisher: Chicago Review Press
ISBN: 0914090887
Category : True Crime
Languages : en
Pages : 346

Book Description
For decades, movies and television shows have portrayed FBI agents as fearless heroes leading glamorous lives, but this refreshingly original memoir strips away the fantasy and glamour and describes the day-to-day job of an FBI special agent. The book gives a firsthand account of a career in the Federal Bureau of Investigation from the academy to retirement, with exciting and engaging anecdotes about SWAT teams, counterterrorism activities, and undercover assignments. At the same time, it challenges the stereotype of FBI agents as arrogant, case-stealing, suit-wearing stiffs with representations of real people who carry badges and guns. With honest, self-deprecating humor, Steve Moore's narrative details his successes and his mistakes, the trauma the job inflicted on his marriage, his triumph over the aggressive cancer that took him out of the field for a year, and his return to the Bureau with renewed vigor and dedication to take on some of the most thrilling assignments of his career. Steve Moore is a former agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation who had assignments as a SWAT team operator, sniper, pilot, counterterrorist, and undercover agent. He received multiple awards from the Department of Justice before his retirement in 2008, has written two episodes for an FBI-themed TV series, and is a regular commentator for Headline News. He lives in Thousand Oaks, California.

ISBN: 1250136652
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 320

Book Description
The explosive memoir of an FBI field operative who has worked more undercover cases than anyone in history. Within FBI field operative circles, groups of people known as “Special” by their titles alone, Michael R. McGowan is an outlier. 10% of FBI Special Agents are trained and certified to work undercover. A quarter of those agents have worked more than one undercover assignment in their careers. And of those, less than 10% of them have been involved in more than five undercover cases. Over the course of his career, McGowan has worked more than 50 undercover cases. In this extraordinary and unprecedented book, McGowan will take readers through some of his biggest cases, from international drug busts, to the Russian and Italian mobs, to biker gangs and contract killers, to corrupt unions and SWAT work. Ghost is an unparalleled view into how the FBI, through the courage of its undercover Special Agents, nails the bad guys. McGowan infiltrates groups at home and abroad, assembles teams to create the myths he lives, concocts fake businesses, coordinates the busts, and helps carry out the arrests. Along the way, we meet his partners and colleagues at the FBI, who pull together for everything from bank jobs to the Boston Marathon bombing case, mafia dons, and, perhaps most significantly, El Chapo himself and his Sinaloa Cartel. Ghost is the ultimate insider's account of one of the most iconic institutions of American government, and a testament to the incredible work of the FBI.

It's Not About the Gun

It's Not About the Gun PDF Author: Kathy Stearman
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 164313731X
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 319

Book Description
After spending more than twenty-years years as a Special Agent with the FBI, Kathy Stearman recounts the global experiences that shaped her life—and the mixed feelings that she now holds about the sacrifices she had to make to survive in a man’s world. When former FBI Agent Kathy Stearman read in the New York Times that sixteen women were suing the FBI for discrimination at the training academy, she was surprised to see the women come forward—no one ever had before. But the truth behind their accusations resonated. After a twenty-six-year career in the Bureau, Kathy Stearman knows from personal experience that this type of behavior has been prevalent for decades. Stearman’s It’s Not About the Gun examines the influence of attitude and gender in her journey to becoming FBI Legal Attaché, the most senior FBI representative in a foreign office. When she entered the FBI Academy in 1987, Stearman was one of about 600 women in a force of 10,000 agents. While there, she evolved into an assertive woman, working her way up the ranks and across the globe to hold positions that very few women have held before. And yet, even at the height of her career, Stearman had to check herself to make sure that she never appeared weak, inferior, or afraid. The accepted attitude for women in power has long been cool, calm, and in control—and sometimes that means coming across as cold and emotionless. Stearman changed for the FBI, but she longs for a different path for future women of the Bureau. If the system changes, then women can remain constant, valuing their female identity and nurturing the people they truly are. In It's Not About the Gun, Stearman describes how she was viewed as a woman and an American overseas, and how her perception of her country and the FBI, observed from the optics of distance, has evolved.
