Grotesque Touch

Grotesque Touch PDF Author: Amy King
Publisher: UNC Press Books
ISBN: 1469664658
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 249

Book Description
In this book, Amy K. King examines how violence between women in contemporary Caribbean and American texts is rooted in plantation slavery. Analyzing films, television shows, novels, short stories, poems, book covers, and paintings, King shows how contemporary media reuse salacious and stereotypical depictions of relationships between women living within the plantation system to confront its legacy in the present. The vestiges of these relationships--enslavers and enslaved women, employers and domestic servants, lovers and rivals--negate characters' efforts to imagine non-abusive approaches to power and agency. King's work goes beyond any other study to date to examine the intersections of gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, class, ability, and nationality in U.S. and Caribbean depictions of violence between women in the wake of slavery.

Lars von Trier's Renewal of Film 1984-2014

Lars von Trier's Renewal of Film 1984-2014 PDF Author: Bodil Marie Stavning Thomsen
Publisher: Aarhus Universitetsforlag
ISBN: 8771846379
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 365

Book Description
Danish director Lars von Trier has produced more than 20 films since his first appearance with The Elements of Crime in 1984. One of the most acknowledged - and most controversial - film directors of our time, Trier's films often escape the representational production of meaning. In Lars von Trier's Renewal of Film 1984-2014. Signal, Pixel, Diagram scholar Bodil Marie Stavning Thomsen offers a comprehensive discussion of Lars von Trier's collected works. Examining Trier's experiments with narrative forms, genre, camera usage, light, and colour tones, she shows how Trier's unique ethically involving style activates the viewer's entire perception apparatus. In understanding this affective involvement, the author frames the discussion around concepts from Gilles Deleuze, Alois Riegl, Brian Massumi and others on the haptic image, the diagram, affect and the signaletic material.

The contributors analyze how beauty vlogging makes community and economic success seem accessible for viewers as well as how the beauty vlog itself can function as a platform for enacting and inspiring social commentary and change. Makeup in the World of Beauty Vlogging studies the cultural phenomenon of the beauty vlog as a space where audiences and vloggers find a voice and a means of personal expression via the potentially subversive power of makeup and social media.
