Handbook on Cuban History, Literature, and the Arts PDF Author: Mauricio Augusto Font

ISBN: 9781612057033
Category : HISTORY

Pages : 314

Book Description
"Puzzled by the conditions that made possible a socialist revolution in Cuba--the first and only in the Western Hemisphere--scholarship after 1959 focused on the historical and cultural aspects of the making of a revolutionary order. Since 2008, the end of Fidel Castro's direct rule, world economic conditions and a wave of reforms and social transformation have forced a reconsideration of Cuban cultural and historical dynamics. The scholarly gaze is now on possibilities for alternative transformations rather than on the deepening of conventional twentieth-century state socialism. This handbook explores key themes in the current debate about Cuba's contemporary cultural and historical dynamics. Leading academics from Cuba, the United States, and Europe bring to light significant revisions of the artistic and literary canon and the historical archive, and they reconsider often neglected subjects and dynamics in historiography as well as contemporary affairs. The book includes new studies on contentious mobilization, leftist activism, and youth organizations in the pre-revolutionary republic. Current analyses include the relation between the Cuban state and intellectuals; institutional legitimation processes; the formation and reconstruction of national identity discourses; and new framings of gender, race, and sexual orientation." -- Publisher's description.

Cuba

Cuba PDF Author: Alan West-Durán
Publisher: Reaktion Books
ISBN: 1780238606
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 288

Book Description
As American-Cuban relations begin to warm, tourists are rushing to discover the throwback tropical paradise just eighty miles off of the American coast. But even as diplomatic relations are changing and the country opens up to the Western world, Cuba remains a rare and fascinating place. Cuba: A Cultural History tells the story of Cuba’s history through an exploration of its rich and vibrant culture. Rather than offer a timeline of Cuban history or a traditional genre-by-genre history of Cuban culture, Alan West-Durán invites readers to enter Cuban history from the perspective of the island’s uniquely creative cultural forms. He traces the restless island as it ebbs and flows with the power, beauty, and longings of its culture and history. In a world where revolutionary socialism is an almost quaint reminder of the decades-old Cold War, the island nation remains one of the few on the planet guided by a Communist party, still committed to fighting imperialism, opposed to the injustices of globalization, and wedded to the dream of one day building a classless society, albeit in a distant future. But as this book shows, Cuba is more than a struggling socialist country—it is a nation with a complex and turbulent history and a rich and varied culture.

Afro-Cuban Religious Arts

Afro-Cuban Religious Arts PDF Author: Kristine Juncker
Publisher: University Press of Florida
ISBN: 0813055024
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 217

Book Description
This book profiles four generations of women from one Afro-Cuban religious family. From a plantation in Havana Province in the 1890s to a religious center in Spanish Harlem in the 1960s, these women were connected by their prominent roles as leaders in the religions they practiced and the dramatic ritual artwork they created. Each woman was a medium in Espiritismo—communicating with dead ancestors for guidance or insight—and also a santera, or priest of Santería, who could intervene with the oricha pantheon. Kristine Juncker argues that, by creating art for more than one religion, these women shatter the popular assumption that Afro-Caribbean religions are exclusive organizations. Most remarkably, the portraiture, sculptures, and photographs in Afro-Cuban Religious Arts offer rare glimpses into the rituals and iconography of these religions. Santería altars are closely guarded, limited to initiates, and typically destroyed upon the death of the santera, while Espiritismo artifacts are rarely considered valuable enough to pass on. The unique and protean cultural legacy detailed here reveals insights into how ritual art became popular imagery, sparked a wider dialogue about culture inheritance, attracted new practitioners, and enabled the movement to explode internationally.
