The Tale of the Heike

The Tale of the Heike PDF Author:
Publisher: [Tokyo] : University of Tokyo Press
ISBN:
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 858

Book Description
The Tale of the Heike is one of the masterworks of Japanese literature, ranking with The Tale of Genji in quality and prestige. Familiar in Japan for generations, first through oral narration and later through the printed page, this fourteenth-century reworking of traditional materials tells the story of the decline and final military defeat of the mighty house of Taira, reporting battlefield exploits in vivid detail, chronicling the fates of high-born ladies and other helpless victims of the times with delicate lyricism, and introducing humorous passages to leaven the comberness of the theme articulated in its famous opening lines: 'The sound of the Gion Shoja bells color of the sala flowers reveals the truth that the prosperous must decline. The proud do not endure, thay are like a dream on a spring night; the mighty fall at last, they are as dust before the wind.' The translation is not only far more readable than earlier ones, it is also much more faithful to the content and style of the original, especially in preserving the evidence of oral narration. Intended for the general audience as well as the specialist, this edition is lightly annotated, but includes three appendixes that give background information, a chronology, and an evaluation of the Heike as literature. There is also a glossary of persons, places, and terms. Illustrations consist of a color frontispiece, about fifteen prints from fourteenth- and fifteenth-century manuscripts, and two maps. --publisher description.

"Dark Pictures" and Other Stories

Author: 野間宏
Publisher: U of M Center for Japanese Studies
ISBN:
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 198

Book Description
Michigan Monograph Series in Japanese Studies No. 30 The short stories that Noma Hiroshi produced in the years of confusion and self-questioning after World War II struck a deep response in his readers. In the three stories contained here--"Dark Pictures," "A Feeling of Disintegration," and "A Red Moon in Her Face"--the main characters are all young men who have lived through the war but have emerged far from unscathed. In "Dark Pictures"--probably the most famous of Noma's stories--the protagonist thinks back to his last meeting with his university friends before they were all arrested. The "dark pictures" of the title refer to paintings and engravings by Brueghel, which the protagonist and his friends had viewed together. The miseries depicted in Brueghel's work seem in retrospect to encapsulate all the miseries the main character has suffered since seeing his friends: persecution, self-doubt, sexual anxiety, warfare, imprisonment, bombardment, and the miseries of life in Japan after the defeat. The other two stories are set in the postwar world of black marketeers and bombsites, but they too concern young men whose universal anxieties about sexual desires and their place in the world are overshadowed by memories of the brutality of war. Influenced by symbolism and the techniques of European modernists, Noma's writing will seem both familiar and eerie to Western readers. These translations offer for the first time the chance for English readers to appreciate the work of this difficult and haunting writer.

Hiroshi Fujiwara

Hiroshi Fujiwara PDF Author:
Publisher: Rizzoli Publications
ISBN: 0847842398
Category : Design
Languages : en
Pages : 234

Book Description
The first monograph on the "godfather of streetwear," this book pays homage to Hiroshi Fujiwara's influence on contemporary fashion, music, and design. The most comprehensive book devoted to the extensive work of Hiroshi Fujiwara-a pioneer in streetwear, music, and art, and the ultimate arbiter of cool. Known internationally as one of the founding fathers of Tokyo's Harajuku scene, Fujiwara exerts a disproportionate influence over contemporary design culture. Having collaborated with the likes of Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood as a teenager in the early 1980s, he merged a seminal interest in punk with hip-hop and skate culture to become one of Japan's principal tastemakers. A musician and producer, Fujiwara is also one of the most prolific sneaker designers, and his kicks are some of the most sought-after collectibles. In addition to his very visible and long-standing collaborations with Nike, he has authored a number of fashion lines and is at the head of the Tokyo-based Fragment Design. Chronicling his reign as the arbiter of hip for more than thirty years, this book presents the breadth of his career, including sections on his highly sought-after artwork and graphics, sneakers, product design, and curated personal effects. With contributions by Sarah Lerfel and Ino Hidefumi, this graphically inspired book provides a unique glimpse into one of the most influential tastemakers of our time and is the perfect follow-up to Rizzoli's Pharrell: Places and Spaces I've Been.

Americans in Waiting

Americans in Waiting PDF Author: Hiroshi Motomura
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 9780199887439
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 256

Book Description
Although America is unquestionably a nation of immigrants, its immigration policies have inspired more questions than consensus on who should be admitted and what the path to citizenship should be. In Americans in Waiting, Hiroshi Motomura looks to a forgotten part of our past to show how, for over 150 years, immigration was assumed to be a transition to citizenship, with immigrants essentially being treated as future citizens--Americans in waiting. Challenging current conceptions, the author deftly uncovers how this view, once so central to law and policy, has all but vanished. Motomura explains how America could create a more unified society by recovering this lost history and by giving immigrants more, but at the same time asking more of them. A timely, panoramic chronicle of immigration and citizenship in the United States, Americans in Waiting offers new ideas and a fresh perspective on current debates.

Legends of Japan

Legends of Japan PDF Author: Hiroshi Naito
Publisher: Tuttle Publishing
ISBN: 1462907725
Category : Literary Collections
Languages : en
Pages : 116

Book Description
These twenty-two Japanese tales open to Western readers the world of fantasy in the legendary literature of Japan—a world of ogres, monkeys, goblins, and priest, of spelling-casting and rescuing people. Rich in variety, Legends of Japan includes tales of the supernatural, magic, and deities, as well as tales of romance and intrigue. The vividness and aesthetic appeal of these stories is enhanced by twenty-two woodblock prints from the studio of modern Japanese illustrator Masahiko Nishin. The tales are drawn from two Japanese masterpieces of the Heian (794-1185) and Kamakura (1192-1333) periods. The earlier and main source is 31-volume Konjaku Monogatari, a collection of tales of Japanese, Chinese and Indian origin. The other source is the miscellany Tsurezure Gusa, by Kento Yoshida, a monk of noble birth who was well versed in Japanese and Chinese literature. A reader's delight, these little books distills the color and charm, the wisdom and humor of two great treasuries of classical Asian literature.
