Book Description
William Clarke Quantrill and his infamous raid of the city of Lawrence in 1863 is known to most who have knowledge of the Civil War on the Missouri/Kansas Border. What led Quantrill and his men to such a drastic and risky undertaking in the first place? Moonlit Mayhem: Quantrill's Raid of Olathe Kansas tells this story from the Bleeding Kansas years to the rise of Quantrill and eventually to the raid on Olathe on September 6, 1862. Quantrill's raid is an event that would shape Olathe's history for many years after and one of which many residents have very little knowledge. Moonlit Mayhem provides a view of life, on both sides of the Missouri/Kansas border. In addition, short summaries of events before and after the Olathe Raid, give the reader a complete picture of the events and key players on both sides. Moonlit Mayhem is packed with over 100 color images maps showing the modern locations of historic events. This meticulously researched work is a must for anyone looking for an easy to understand book on the Border War and its impact on the residents of the border counties. There were no winners and losers in the border war, the residents of the border counties suffered greatly. Moonlit Mayhem tells their story.

The State of Jones

The State of Jones PDF Author: Sally Jenkins
Publisher: Anchor
ISBN: 0767929462
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 433

Book Description
Covering the same ground as the major motion picture The Free State of Jones, starring Matthew McConaughey, this is the extraordinary true story of the anti-slavery Southern farmer who brought together poor whites, army deserters and runaway slaves to fight the Confederacy in deepest Mississippi. "Moving and powerful." -- The Washington Post. In 1863, after surviving the devastating Battle of Corinth, Newton Knight, a poor farmer from Mississippi, deserted the Confederate Army and began a guerrilla battle against it. A pro-Union sympathizer in the deep South who refused to fight a rich man’s war for slavery and cotton, for two years he and other residents of Jones County engaged in an insurrection that would have repercussions far beyond the scope of the Civil War. In this dramatic account of an almost forgotten chapter of American history, Sally Jenkins and John Stauffer upend the traditional myth of the Confederacy as a heroic and unified Lost Cause, revealing the fractures within the South.

Battlefield Atlas of Price's Missouri Expedition Of 1864

Battlefield Atlas of Price's Missouri Expedition Of 1864 PDF Author: Charles Collins
Publisher: Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
ISBN: 9781719088947
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 232

Book Description
This 230 page atlas is divided into seven parts. Part I, Missouri's Divided Loyalties, and Part II, Missouri's Five Seasons, provide an overview of Missouri's history from the initial settlement of the Louisiana Purchase Territories through the opening years of the American Civil War. The remaining parts cover the Confederate plan, the Confederate movement into Missouri and the Union reaction, the Confederate retreat and Union pursuit into Kansas, and the final Confederate escape back into Arkansas. The atlas has a standard format with the map to left and the narrative to the right. Each narrative closes with two or more primary source vignettes. These vignettes provide an overview of the events shown on the map and discussed in the narrative from the perspective of persons who participated in the events. In most cases there are two vignettes with the first from a person loyal to the Union and the second from a person who supported the southern cause. A few narratives have two or more vignettes from only the Union side. This was done to emphasize disagreements and struggles among senior leaders to establish a common course of action. Map 25, Decision at the Little Blue River, is a good example and the three vignettes emphasize the disagreement between Maj. Gen. Samuel Curtis and his subordinate, Maj. Gen. James Blunt on where to locate the Union defensive line.
