Book Description
Excerpt from Letters on Modern Agriculture The author points out the nature of this fallacy, and in the discussion of this subject, brings forward new and important facts connected with the nu trition of plants, and jith the mode of action of some Special manures. The mineral food of plants is shown by him to exist in the soil in two different states; in the one, it is immediately avail able; in the other, it is not yet brought by decom position into a condition for absorption by the roots. In every case the produce of a field and the duration of its fertility bear a fixed relation to the sum of the available food in the soil. Hence, if by mechanical or chemical means applied to the soil, we render the absorption of this food by plants more rapid, we thereby increase the amount of produce in a given time, and thus more quickly exhaust the stock. At the end of this given time the field will, for agri cultural purposes, be unproductive, if the mineral matters removed by the cr0ps be not restored.
