Excerpt from Manual of Land Surveying: With Tables The following little work has been prepared with the doable object of furnishing a text-book in this branch of practical mathematics, and also a manual for the use of the surveyor. No attempt has been made to extend the work beyond the bounds indicated in the title. It will be found to be simply a treatise on Land Surveying accompanied with such practical directions and tables as the experience of American surveyors has shown to be most useful. The methods and instruments described are mainly those which prevail in American practice, and which have been found best adapted to the peculiar wants of this country. At the same time, in order to adapt the practice to the demand for more rigorous methods, and to give to the measurement of land the precision which its increase in value requires, greater prominence has been given to the use of the Transit in surveying and improved modes of computing the areas introduced. The admirable plates of field instruments with which the work is embellished, and which contribute so materially to the value of the book, have been kindly placed at the disposal of the author by the eminent manufacturers of Engineers' and Surveyors' Instruments, Messrs. W. Sc L. E. Curley, of Troy, N. Y. The author acknowledges his obligations to his associates, Professor George H. Cook and Professor E. A.
