Book Description
The field of fibre optics communications has exploded over the past two decades. Fibre is an integral part of modern day communication infrastructure and can be found along roads, in buildings, hospitals and machinery. Fibre optic communication has revolutionised the telecommunications industry. It has also made its presence widely felt within the data networking community as well. Using fibre optic cable, optical communications have enabled telecommunications links to be made over much greater distances and with much lower levels of loss in the transmission medium and possibly most important of all, fiber optical communications has enabled much higher data rates to be accommodated. Optical fibers can be used to transmit light and thus information over long distances. Fiber-based systems have largely replaced radio transmitter systems for long-haul optical data transmission. They are widely used for telephony, but also for Internet traffic, long high-speed local area networks (LANs), cable TV (CATV), and increasingly also for shorter distances within buildings. In most cases, silica fibers are used, except for very short distances, where plastic optical fibers can be advantageous. The basic components are light signal transmitter, the optical fiber, and the photo detecting receiver. The additional elements such as fiber and cable splicers and connectors, regenerators, beam splitters, and optical amplifiers are employed to improve the performance of the communication system. The book offers a completely up-to-date, accessible, and in-depth introduction to the principles and applications of optical fiber communications. It describes the recent developments in optical fiber communication materials, devices, components, and systems.

ISBN: 1316870537
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 474

Book Description
Beginning with an overview of historical development, the electromagnetic spectrum, and optical power basics, this book offers an in-depth discussion of optic receivers, optical transmitters and amplifiers. The text discusses attenuation, transmission losses, optical sources such as semiconductor light emitting diodes, and lasers, providing several dispersion-management schemes that restore the amplified signal to its original state. Topics are discussed in a structured manner, with definitions, explanations, examples, illustrations, and informative facts. Extensive pedagogical features, such as numerical problems, review questions, multiple choice questions, and student-focussed learning objectives, are also provided. Mathematical derivations and geometrical representations are included where necessary. This text will be useful for undergraduate and graduate students of electronics, communication engineering, and optical fiber communications.

Fiber Optic Communications

Fiber Optic Communications PDF Author: Shiva Kumar
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1118683447
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 576

Book Description
Fiber-optic communication systems have advanced dramaticallyover the last four decades, since the era of copper cables, resulting in low-cost and high-bandwidth transmission. Fiber opticsis now the backbone of the internet and long-distancetelecommunication. Without it we would not enjoy the benefits ofhigh-speed internet, or low-rate international telephone calls. This book introduces the basic concepts of fiber-opticcommunication in a pedagogical way. The important mathematicalresults are derived by first principles rather than citing researcharticles. In addition, physical interpretations and real-worldanalogies are provided to help students grasp the fundamentalconcepts. Key Features: Lucid explanation of key topics such as fibers, lasers, andphotodetectors. Includes recent developments such as coherent communication anddigital signal processing. Comprehensive treatment of fiber nonlinear transmission. Worked examples, exercises, and answers. Accompanying website with PowerPoint slides and numericalexperiments in MATLAB. Intended primarily for senior undergraduates and graduatesstudying fiber-optic communications, the book is also suitable as aprofessional resource for researchers working in the field offiber-optic communications.

Book Description
Annotation With the maturing of mobile portable telephony and the emerging broadband access market, greater fiber transmission capacity will be essential in the early 21st century. Since the demand for more capacity drives the development of new optics-based technologies, fiber optics therefore remains a vibrant area for research. Mathematical Principles of Optical Fiber Communications is intended to support and promote interdisciplinary research in optical fiber communications by providing essential background in both the physical and mathematical principles of the discipline. Chapter topics include the basics of fibers and their construction, fiber modes and the criterion of single mode operation, the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, the variational approach to the analysis of pulse propagation, and, finally, solitons and some new results on soliton formation energy thresholds. These chapters are written to be as independent as possible while taking the reader to the frontiers of research on fiber optics communications.
