Medical Stigmata

Medical Stigmata PDF Author: Kirk A. Johnson
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9811329923
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 178

Book Description
This book observes the idea of race as a false representation for the cause of disease. Race-based medicine, an emerging field in pharmacology, aims to create a specialty market based on racial groups. Within this market, the drug BiDil set a precedent in this area of medicine targeting African Americans as its first racial group. Consequently, selecting African Americans as a “starter group” led to ethical questions regarding the motive behind race-based medicine within the context of the larger treatment of blacks in American medical history. This book therefore links medicine and American eugenics, examines race-based medicine’s influence on the perception of the black body, traces the influence of BiDil’s approval on the resurgence of race-based medicine, and assesses the black church’s response to race-based medicine using black liberation theology as a means to social justice.

Social stigma, in particular, represents a major obstacle to maintaining adequate mental health care. This increases reluctance to seek help delays patients' diagnosis and limits their compliance and adherence to treatment. In the long term, this reduces psychiatric rehabilitation effectiveness and causes a burden to healthcare providers and society alike. The main goal of this Research Topic is to evaluate the impact and role of stigma, in all its forms, on individuals with psychiatric disorders, their caregivers, and mental health providers.

Publisher: IGI Global
ISBN: 1668489201
Category : Social Science

Book Description
Mental health among African Americans historically has been kept secret, and often has been subject to intense denial from both the individuals with mental health concerns and their communities. Thus, African Americans have remained shielded from treatments that are currently available, which may allow them to become mentally healthier and find a sense of psychological homeostasis. Recognizing mental illness treatment as a strength and not a weakness is key to mitigating existing issues of mental health in the African American community today. Changing the Stigma of Mental Health Among African Americans: Moving From Denial to Acceptance provides the history of mental health in the African American community and how denial has hindered and hampered treatment within this community. Covering topics such as bipolar disorder, dementia, and disruptive behavior, this book is ideal for educators, researchers, practitioners, the African American spiritual community, and all individuals concerned about psychological care for African Americans.
