Book Description
Toward the Meeting of the Waters brings together voices of leading historians alongside recollections from central participants to provide the first comprehensive history of the civil rights movement as experienced by black and white South Carolinians. The volumes opening section assesses the transition of South Carolina leaders from defiance to moderate enforcement of federally mandated integration and includes commentary by former governor and U.S. senator Ernest F. Hollings and former governor John C. West. The next sections recall defining moments of white-on-black violence and aggression to set the context for understanding the efforts of reformers such as Levi G. Byrd and Septima Poinsette Clark and for interpreting key episodes of white resistance. The next section forms an oral history of the era as it was experienced by a mixture of locally and nationally recognized participants, including historians such as John Hope Franklin and Tony Badger as well as civil rights activists Joseph A. De Laine Jr., Beatrice Brown Rivers, Charles McDew, Constance Curry, Matthew J. Perry Jr., Harvey B. Gantt, and Cleveland Sellers Jr. The volume concludes with essays by historians who bring this story to the present day.

Book Description
Brave, copper-haired Aoife was the daughter of a king, a bold young woman full of life and mischief. But on one winter's night she and her brothers took part in an act of careless mischief with consequences they could never have imagined -- and a deadly blood price must be paid. The druid Dalan has been sent to unite two squabbling kings in the face of this overwhelming force, but chaos and confusion confront him at every turn. As dangerous bargains are made and broken, and truces struck and disregarded, Dalan begins to suspect that an even greater enemy is moving against Innisfail. Jaguars of the Northern Pantanal

Jaguars of the Northern Pantanal PDF Author: Paul Brooke
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 9780128221389
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages :

Book Description
Jaguars of the Northern Pantanal: Panthera onca at the Meeting of the Waters details the lives and behaviors of this subpopulation of jaguars through one-of-a-kind photographs from 26 international photographers, as well as illustrations, maps, waypoints, scientific insights, field journal excerpts and personal narratives. These jaguars are the largest in the world because they eat enormous prey and these jaguars have also become habituated to human observation. The book seeks to understand how locals can coexist with these cats while benefitting financially from them through ecotourism. It provides a conceptual model to apply to other subpopulations in order to save jaguars throughout North and South America. This book focuses on jaguars in the Southern Brazil ecosystem to capture these cats up close, observing them hunting, sleeping, mating and raising their cubs. Every day in the Northern Pantanal, during the dry season, is dramatic and often revealing. The book works to uncover the intricate lives of these misunderstood animals by freezing and uncoding their behaviors. Within this glut of ecotourism, the book delves into threats and issues facing these jaguars, from poaching ranchers to soybean production, deforestation, habitat destruction, and chemical toxicity from agriculture run-off (and chemical toxicity). Jaguars of the Northern Pantanal: Panthera onca at the Meeting of the Waters is perfect for researchers and practitioners in wildlife conservation, naturalism ecotourism, and biologists.

From the Amazon to America! Lais, a native South American girl, has grown up in the fascinating Amazon rainforest, nurtured by her tribal culture, and living in harmony with nature. But the world is changing, and her jungle paradise is suddenly a target for exploitation and invasive disease. When an opportunity arises to save Lais from the illness that is ravaging her village, she and her parents make a difficult decision to send her out into the wider world of modern Brazil with Alfredo, a local man who is a friend to Lais' tribe. While she is with him, her intelligence and courage catch the attention of a wealthy American businessman who wants to adopt her. Lais knows that leaving home will be the hardest thing she will ever do, but she summons up all her courage in the hope that going to America will give her the opportunity to work toward preserving her heritage and improving life for her people when she grows up. And so, the most amazing adventure begins, as Lais is thrown into a world completely different from her own. Along the way, she will overcome many emotional and psychological challenges as she is confronted with culture shock and prejudices from people she meets. But Lais knows that it doesn't matter where people come from-what matters is who they are.
