The LOS Diaries Part Three

The LOS Diaries Part Three PDF Author: Mark Jones
Publisher: Booksmango
ISBN: 1633232964
Category : Travel
Languages : en
Pages : 219

Book Description
In this, the third instalment of “The LOS Diaries”, Mark Jones provides more experienced comment on the cultural nuances of a rapidly developing part of the world. Living the dream in South East Asia, the author once again mixes his own brand of laconic storytelling with humorous and insightful observations on the region. Expanding on his experiences in the area’s naughty nightlife scene, short travel diaries provide an interesting look at the remote and far flung reaches beyond the red light districts of downtown Bangkok, Pattaya and Singapore. The comforts of the tourist fleshpots are left far behind in sojourns to the mountainous regions of Northern Laos and the remote temple sites of Cambodia. These are the LOS Diaries.

Artists Respond

Artists Respond PDF Author: Melissa Ho
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 0691191182
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 417

Book Description
How the Vietnam War changed American art By the late 1960s, the United States was in a pitched conflict in Vietnam, against a foreign enemy, and at home—between Americans for and against the war and the status quo. This powerful book showcases how American artists responded to the war, spanning the period from Lyndon B. Johnson’s fateful decision to deploy U.S. Marines to South Vietnam in 1965 to the fall of Saigon ten years later. Artists Respond brings together works by many of the most visionary and provocative artists of the period, including Asco, Chris Burden, Judy Chicago, Corita Kent, Leon Golub, David Hammons, Yoko Ono, and Nancy Spero. It explores how the moral urgency of the Vietnam War galvanized American artists in unprecedented ways, challenging them to reimagine the purpose and uses of art and compelling them to become politically engaged on other fronts, such as feminism and civil rights. The book presents an era in which artists struggled to synthesize the turbulent times and participated in a process of free and open questioning inherent to American civic life. Beautifully illustrated, Artists Respond features a broad range of art, including painting, sculpture, printmaking, performance and body art, installation, documentary cinema and photography, and conceptualism. These are the edited (i.e. transcribed, annotated and indexed) diaries of Sir Ernest Satow (1843-1929) for the six years from the time when he left Japan early in 1883, through his time as Agent and Consul-General and subsequent promotion to Minister Resident at Bangkok, until his return to London and his request in December 1887 for another posting on health grounds. The period includes his visits to Japan (officially for rest and recuperation) in 1884 and 1886, and to Paris, Rome and Lisbon for research into the Jesuits in Japan conducted early in 1888, and the confirmation of his appointment to Montevideo in October of that year. Throughout the period his ultimate goal was promotion to Minister in Japan, which he achieved in 1895. The original diaries are in the National Archives (UK). Vietnam Posters

Vietnam Posters PDF Author: David Heather
Publisher: Prestel Publishing
ISBN:
Category : Political posters, Vietnamese
Languages : en
Pages : 288

Book Description
"Heather (North Korean Posters), a collector of North Korean and Vietnamese art, and Buchanan (Vietnam Zippos: American Soldiers' Engravings and Stories) here present full- and half-page reproductions of Communist propaganda posters printed in Vietnam from the 1960s to the present. Buchanan's discussions in the introductory essay on the printing methods and native materials used in wartime posters are especially captivating. The posters, captioned in English and German, are arranged into four subject groups: war; Ho Chi Minh and the Communist Party; agriculture; and education, population control, and voting. Because the material is organized by topic, it would have been helpful for the captions to include approximate dates. VERDICT An original and nicely produced book; recommended for students and lay readers with an interest in Vietnam or propaganda art. Eric Linderman, Euclid P.L., OH"--Library Journal Reviews.
