Book Description
Excerpt from Mind-Reading and Beyond "From the recorded testimony of many competent witnesses, past and present, including observations recently made by scientific men of eminence in various countries, there appears to be, amidst much illusion and deception, an important body of remarkable phenomena which are prima facie inexplicable on any generally recognized hypothesis, and which, if incontestibly established, would be of the highest possible value." This statement is found on the opening page of the first volume of the proceedings of the Society for Psychical Research (London), published in 1882. The Society grew out of a conference held in London, Jan. 6, 1882, and was definitely constituted on the 20th of February following. A programme for future work was at once sketched out by the Council of the Society, in pursuance of which the following subjects were entrusted to special committees: - I. An examination of the nature and extent of any influence which may be exerted by one mind upon another, apart from any recognized mode of perception. II. The study of hypnotism, and the forms of so-called mesmeric trance, with its alleged insensibility to pain; clairvoyance, and other allied phenomena, III. A critical revision of Reichenbach's researches with certain organizations called "sensitive," and an inquiry whether such organizations possess any power of perception beyond a highly exalted sensibility of the recognized sensory organs. Freud and Beyond
Author: Stephen A. Mitchell
Publisher: Basic Books
ISBN: 0465098827
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 312
Book Description
The classic, in-depth history of psychoanalysis, presenting over a hundred years of thought and theories Sigmund Freud's concepts have become a part of our psychological vocabulary: unconscious thoughts and feelings, conflict, the meaning of dreams, the sensuality of childhood. But psychoanalytic thinking has undergone an enormous expansion and transformation since Freud's death in 1939. With Freud and Beyond, Stephen A. Mitchell and Margaret J. Black make the full scope of twentieth century psychoanalytic thinking—from Harry Stack Sullivan to Jacques Lacan; D.W. Winnicott to Melanie Klein—available for the first time. Richly illustrated with case examples, this lively, jargon-free introduction makes modern psychoanalytic thought accessible at last.
