Book Description
This volume is the proceedings from the Swiss Society for Neuropathology XVIIIth International Winter Meeting on Neuropathology and Genetics of Dementia, held March 23-26, 2000, in St. Moritz, Switzerland. For more than 35 years the Swiss Society of Neuropathology has organised its traditional International Winter Meeting, whose main aim is to bring together neuropathologists and clinicians as well as neuroscientists interested in disease mechanisms. The topic of the 2000 Meeting was Neuropathology and Genetics of Dementia. A programme of invited plenary lectures of high educational value as well as platform and poster presentations given by many participants covered the broad spectrum of dementing disorders. Encouraged by the high standard of the meeting, and probably also influenced by the advent of a new Millennium, it was decided to publish the Proceedings of the 2000 Meeting in the present book.

Genetic Testing for Alzheimer Disease

Genetic Testing for Alzheimer Disease PDF Author: Stephen Garrard Post
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Family & Relationships
Languages : en
Pages : 310

Book Description
The genetics of Alzheimer disease has been a point of intense concern and immense informational confusion for families in which a loved one is diagnosed with dementia. In recent years, however, scientists have begun to uncover the genetic bases for some forms of Alzheimer disease. Once a chromosomal defect is identified, it becomes possible to devise a test for its presence. The far-reaching implications of such tests are the focus of the present volume. In Genetic Testing for Alzheimer Disease, Stephen G. Post and Peter J. Whitehouse bring together experts from the fields of ethics, genetics, policy, neurology, philosophy, and anthropology to examine the ethical and social aspects of genetic testing for Alzheimer disease. The authors begin by focusing on current genetic findings and their clinical applicability. They then address ethical issues in genetic testing and genetic counseling for Alzheimer disease. They examine social issues such as confidentiality, discrimination, and fairness in health care. Finally, they discuss ways to educate professionals and laypeople regarding these issues. Genetics and Alzheimer’s Disease

Genetics and Alzheimer’s Disease PDF Author: Pierre M. Sinet
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642736475
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 198

Book Description
This volume contains the proceedings of the meeting Genetics and Alzheimer's Disease held in Paris, on March 25,1988, by the Fondation Ipsen pour la Recherche Therapeuti que. This meeting was the second of the series of Colloques Medecine et Recherche devoted to Alzheimer's disease. The first one was held in Angers (France) on September 14, 1987; the proceedings of this meeting have already been published and are entitled Immunology and Alzheimer's Disease (1988, edited by A Pouplard-Barthelaix, J Emile, and Y Christen). The third Colloque Medecine et Recherche, organized in Montpellier on Sep tember 19, 1988, dealt with neuronal grafting; the proceedings of this last meeting will be published in early 1989 (Neuronal Grafting and Alzheimer's Disease: Future Perspectives, edited by F Gage, A Privat and Y Christen). In each case, the Fondation Ipsen deliberately focuses attention on the most up-to-date themes, and sometimes the most controversial ones, from medical and scientific research. The genetic aspects of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) stands at the very forefront of research carried out in the last 2 years. It complements research using the formal approach, which has become possible thanks to the study of extended kindreds by J-F Foncin and other scientists. The recent work on molecular and genetics biology has followed two main pathways: 1. The study of the gene(s) responsible for the familial form(s), which can be considered the AD gene(s).

The Behavioral Neurology of Dementia

The Behavioral Neurology of Dementia PDF Author: Bruce L. Miller

After years of little progress, the pace of discovery has been speeding up in the last decade, and the authors distil the most valuable discoveries into clear, insightful chapters with applicable information. All the chapters from the first edition have been refreshed with new text and figures. There are new chapters on autoimmune antibody-associated encephalopathy; chronic traumatic encephalopathy; and sleep issues in dementia.

Neurodegeneration

Neurodegeneration PDF Author: Dennis Dickson
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1405196939
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 497

Book Description
Most textbooks on neurodegenerative disorders have used a classification scheme based upon either clinical syndromes or anatomical distribution of the pathology. In contrast, this book looks to the future and uses a classification based upon molecular mechanisms, rather than clinical or anatomical boundaries. Major advances in molecular genetics and the application of biochemical and immunocytochemical techniques to neurodegenerative disorders have generated this new approach. Throughout most of the current volume, diseases are clustered according to the proteins that accumulate within cells (e.g. tau, α-synuclein and TDP-43) and in the extracellular compartments (e.g. β-amyloid and prion proteins) or according to a shared pathogenetic mechanism, such as trinucleotide repeats, that are a feature of specific genetic disorders. Chapters throughout the book conform to a standard lay-out for ease of access by the reader and are written by a panel of International Experts Since the first edition of this book, major advances have been made in the discovery of common molecular mechanisms between many neurodegenerative diseases most notably in the frontotemporal lobar degenerations (FTLD) and motor neuron disease or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. This book will be essential reading for clinicians, neuropathologists and basic neuroscientists who require the firm up-to-date knowledge of mechanisms, diagnostic pathology and genetics of Neurodegenerative diseases that is required for progress in therapy and management.
