Book Description
Order and accident, meticulousness and impulsivity, drawing excess and graphic reduction are just some of the vibrant tension-loaded polarities that characterize the complex and large-sized drawings of German artist Jorinde Voigt. In the dynamic sequences of strokes, turbulently curving lines, diagrammatic structures, numbers, word fragments, and collaged color areas of her drawings - which the passionate cello-player refers to as "scores" or "notations"--Numerous widely different elements of the cultural environment condense. Pop songs or pieces of classical music, temperature profiles, wind directions, arcs of light are systematically analyzed by the artist, as are acoustic impulses, angles of view, or colors of individual plants and the contents of philosophical texts. Following measureable parameters like time, place, or sound volume as well as selfdefined rules or selected algorithms, Voigt combines these elements and impressions of reality into dynamic relational structures.00Exhibition: Kunsthalle Krems, Austria (14.11.15 - 21.02.2016).

Book Description
Jorinde Voigt has developed an idiosyncratic visual language with her meticulous, large'format drawings, one that presents a quasi-abstract code of signs that seems deeply subjective and individual, yet is nonetheless subject to strict rules. Eliminating the boundary between science and art, she analyzes the structures of diverse cultural and natural phenomena in her notations and scores.

Book Description
In her new series of 36 drawings, "Piece for Words and Views" Jorinde Voigt is concerned with processes of perception and imagination. The artist took Roland Barthes' 'Fragmente einer Sprache der Liebe'(2004) ('Fragments d'un discours amoureux', 1977) and Douglas R. Hofstadter's 'Go del, Escher, Bach. Ein Endloses Geflochtenes Band' ('Go del, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid', 1979) as patterns for this work. Voigt transposes words from these classics into her encoded language of notation and collage technique. The division of the series into three blocks with 21, nine and six sheets reflects Voigt's study of the different chapters in the books. The drawing cycle was produced as a direct continuation of the collages '308 Views on Plants and Trees' and '100 Views on Chinese Erotic Art. From 16th to 20th Century' (2011). After the worlds of botany and fine art, the artist has now turned to literature as a field of research.

Book Description
Discover highlights from one of the world's most diverse and prestigious drawing collections. Two decades ago, art collectors Florence and Daniel Guerlain decided to focus their energies on shaping a collection of contemporary works on paper. In 2013 they donated a large part of their holdings--1,200 works in total--to the Centre Pompidou in Paris. This book includes exquisite full-page reproductions of one hundred drawings and offers readers the chance to experience the extraordinary scope of the Guerlain collection through spectacular contemporary examples from an often overlooked medium. Among the artists featured in the book are Robert Longo, Kiki Smith, Jorinde Voigt, Marcel Dzama, Catharina Van Eetvelde, and Sandra Vasquez de la Horra. Works by other artists who are better known for their painting, sculpture, and performance art, deepen and enhance our experience of their respective oeuvres. This volume opens with an interview with Florence and Daniel Guerlain, and continues with brief essays by curator Elsy Lahner about each of the artists and their artwork, while an essay by Isabelle Dervaux explores the significance of this collection.

A Giacometti Portrait

A Giacometti Portrait PDF Author: James Lord
Publisher: Macmillan
ISBN: 9780374515737
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 132

Book Description
When we look at a painting hanging on an art gallery wall, we see only what the artist has chosen to disclose--the finished work of art. What remains mysterious is the process of creation itself--the making of the work of art. Everyone who has looked at paintings has wondered about this, and numerous efforts have been made to discover and depict the creative method of important artists. A Giacometti Portrait is a picture of one of the century's greatest artists at work. James Lord sat for eighteen days while his friend Alberto Giamcometti did his portrait in oil. The artist painted, and the model recorded the sittings and took photographs of the work in its various stages. What emerged was an illumination of what it is to be an artist and what it was to be Giacometti--a portrait in prose of the man and his art. A work of great literary distinction, A Giacometti Portrait is, above all, a subtle and important evocation of a great artist.
