Outside the Clause

Outside the Clause PDF Author: Gunther Kaltenböck
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing Company
ISBN: 9027266557
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 450

Book Description
This volume brings together a number of articles on the form and function of extra-clausal constituents, a group of linguistic elements which have puzzled linguists by defying analysis in terms of ordinary sentence grammar. Given their high frequency and communicative importance, these elements can, however, no longer be dismissed as a marginal linguistic phenomenon. In recent years this awareness has resulted not only in more systematic treatments of extra-clausal constituents, but has also highlighted the need to account for them in grammatical theory. Based on (mainly English) corpus data, the volume investigates the discourse-pragmatic, semantic, syntactic and phonological features of a range of extra-clausal constituents, including discourse markers, free adjuncts, left dislocands, insubordinate clauses and various kinds of adverbials. The individual chapters adopt a number of different perspectives, investigating the diachronic development of extra-clausal constituents, their multi-functionality and their use in bilingual settings, also addressing the question of how they can be incorporated into existing models of grammar.

Grammar Inside and Outside the Clause

Grammar Inside and Outside the Clause PDF Author: Johanna Nichols
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780521266178
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 419

Book Description
This collection presents theoretically significant work on the syntax of the clause - writing arising from field work on languages with radically different clause organization from those that have informed much theoretical work in syntax. The papers advance linguistic theory and description in three critical areas of clause grammar: the discreteness of the clause as a linguistic unit; the relation between discourse cohesion and the close syntactic cohesion which links clauses within sentences; and the understanding of parameters underlying systems of clause-internal grammatical relation, from traditional 'accusative' (subject-direct object) systems to lesser known 'ergative' and 'split-intransitive' systems. These advances are a natural consequence of an inductive, comparative, phenomenon-oriented approach to linguistic variability and universality which, the authors argue, must become an equal partner with approaches predominantly oriented toward the development of particular theoretical models.

The Semantics of Clause Linking

The Semantics of Clause Linking PDF Author: R. M. W. Dixon
Publisher: OUP Oxford
ISBN: 0191609951
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 432

Book Description
This book is a cross-linguistic examination of the different grammatical means languages employ to represent a general set of semantic relations between clauses. The investigations focus on ways of combining clauses other than through relative and complement clause constructions. These span a number of types of semantic linking. Three, for example, describe varieties of consequence - cause, result, and purpose - which may be illustrated in English by, respectively: Because John has been studying German for years, he speaks it well; John has been studying German for years, thus he speaks it well; and John has been studying German for years, in order that he should speak it well. Syntactic descriptions of languages provide a grammatical analysis of clause types. The chapters in this book add the further dimension of semantics, generally in the form of focal and supporting clauses, the former referring to the central activity or state of the biclausal linking; and the latter to the clause attached to it. The supporting clause may set out the temporal milieu for the focal clause or specify a condition or presupposition for it or a preliminary statement of it, as in Although John has been studying German for years (the supporting clause), he does not speak it well (the focal clause). Professor Dixon's extensive opening discussion is followed by fourteen case studies of languages ranging from Korean and Kham to Iquito and Ojibwe. The book's concluding synthesis is provided by Professor Aikhenvald.

Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 368

Book Description
This second edition of the best-selling textbook Working with Discourse has been revised and updated throughout. The book builds an accessible set of analytic tools that can be used to explore how speakers and writers construe meaning through discourse. These techniques are introduced in clear steps, through analyses of spoken, written and visual texts that focus on truth and reconciliation in post-apartheid South Africa. The new edition includes a chapter on Negotiation, clear definitions of key terms, chapter summaries and revised suggestions for further reading. Accessibly written and presupposing no prior knowledge of discourse or functional linguistics, this is the ideal textbook for students encountering discourse analysis for the first time at advanced undergraduate or postgraduate level.

Mermaid Construction

Mermaid Construction PDF Author: Tasaku Tsunoda
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3110670844
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 882

Book Description
This volume provides detailed studies of the crosslinguistically unusual mermaid construction in seventeen languages of Asia, including Modern Standard Japanese, and one language of Africa. This construction appears to be absent in languages of Europe, Oceania and the Americas. The name - mermaid construction - alludes to its paradoxical make-up, where the structure closely resembling a verb-predicate clause ends with what may look like a noun-predicate clause. Superficially it looks biclausal; however, syntactically it is monoclausal. It has a compound predicate which contains an independent noun, a clitic or an affix derived from a noun, or a nominalizer. Its compound predicate has a modal, evidential, aspectual, temporal, stylistic or discourse-related meaning. The paradox is resolved from a diachronic perspective insofar as a biclausal structure is reanalyzed as a monoclausal one. This volume shows how a noun may be reanalyzed to become a constituent of a predicate. It constitutes an important contribution to research on grammaticalization and in particular, the grammaticalization of nouns and more generally, to the typology of syntactic reanalysis.

Adverbs and Modality in English

Adverbs and Modality in English PDF Author: Leo Hoye
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317893603
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 335

Book Description
This new study on modality in English represents a departure from more traditional approaches to the subject, where the modal auxiliaries have been the usual focus of attention, by examining in detail the nature of their association with different categories of modal adverb. Modality is notoriously complex but the present work offers an accessible introduction to the topic, a comprehensive account of modal-adverb co-occurrence, and a reappraisal of the English modal system. The descriptive framework draws fresh insights from syntactic, semantic and pragmatic approaches to the study of language and communication, and from recent work in corpus linguistics. The book includes contrastive reference to the expression of modality in Spanish and a discussion of modality in such applied contexts as language teaching. A major feature is its reliance on authentic spoken and written language data. The study is suitable for undergraduate and postgraduate students of linguistics, English language, communications studies and related disciplines.

Levels in Clause Linkage

Levels in Clause Linkage PDF Author: Tasaku Tsunoda
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3110519240
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 906

Book Description
This is a cross-linguistic exploration of the use of clause linkage markers in causal, conditional, and concessive sentences. Employing a five-level classification of clause linkage based on semantic and pragmatic grounds, it shows that, within individual languages different markers exhibit different distributions on the five levels. Also, the rich evidence presented from seventeen languages from many parts of the world documents that these distributions present commonalities as well as differences across the languages of the sample.

A Typological Study of the Existential Clause

A Typological Study of the Existential Clause PDF Author: Wang Yong
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1040051359
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 209

Book Description
This book investigates the existential clause (EC) from a cross-linguistic perspective and within the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics. The prototypical EC in the less familiar languages is identified through its functional equivalents in the more familiar ones, which share the common semantic basis of ‘there exists something in some location’. Topics addressed include the morpho-syntactic features of the EC, the subject of the EC, the definiteness effect and its manifestations in the EC, the EC as impersonals, the distinction between entity- vs. event-existentials, and the EC and its related constructions. Drawing on both cross-linguistic observations based on the language sample and in-depth investigations in particular languages (e.g., in Chinese and English), the study aims to unravel how the lexico-grammar of EC is related to its meanings and functions, that is, how meaning is realised in form. The title will appeal to scholars and students in the field of linguistics, especially functional linguistics, and syntax.
