Book Description
Peter Pan; or, the Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up, also known as Peter and Wendy, is a work of children's fiction by Scottish author James M. Barrie, first published as a book in 1911. It tells the story of Peter Pan, an innocent but sometimes naughty boy who is able to fly and who never grows up. He lives on the island of Neverland, amongst pirates, fairies, and the Lost Boys (boys who fall out of their prams when the nurse is looking the other way and sent to the Neverland if they are not claimed in seven days). Peter takes to visiting the nursery of the Darling family, listening in as Mary Darling tells bedtime stories to her children, Wendy, John, and Michael. One night he is noticed, and after he learns that Wendy knows many stories as well, he invites her to Neverland to become a mother figure to Peter and the Lost Boys. Once there, they go on many adventures, until Wendy remembers her parents and wants to go home. Captured by Captain Hook, and saved by Peter, the children (along with the Lost Boys) are returned home by a somewhat resentful Peter. He is invited to stay but refuses, afraid they will "catch him and make him a man." Peter Pan has 17 chapters: Chapter 1. Peter Breaks Through; Chapter 2. The Shadow; Chapter 3. Come Away, Come Away!; Chapter 4. The Flight; Chapter 5. The Island Come True; Chapter 6. The Little House; Chapter 7. The Home Under The Ground; Chapter 8. The Mermaids' Lagoon; Chapter 9. The Never Bird; Chapter 10. The Happy Home; Chapter 11. Wendy's Story; Chapter 12. The Children Are Carried Off; Chapter 13. Do You Believe In Fairies?; Chapter 14. The Pirate Ship; Chapter 15. "Hook Or Me This Time"; Chapter 16. The Return Home; and, Chapter 17. When Wendy Grew Up.

The Case of Peter Pan

The Case of Peter Pan PDF Author: Jacqueline Rose
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 1349232084
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 199

Book Description
What does Peter Pan have to say about our conception of childhood, about how we understand the child's and our own relationship to language, sexuality, and death? What can Peter Pan tell us about the theatrical, literary, and educational institutions of which it is a part? In a new preface written especially for this edition, Rose accounts for some of the new developments since her book's first publication in 1984. She discusses some of Peter Pan's new guises and their implications. From Spielberg's Hook, to the lesbian production of the play at the London Drill Hall in 1991, to debates in the English House of Lords, to a newly claimed status as the icon of a transvestite culture, Peter Pan continues to demonstrate its bizarre renewability as a cultural fetish of our times.
