Preclinical Atherosclerosis, Global Cardiovascular Risk and Cardiovascular Events

Preclinical Atherosclerosis, Global Cardiovascular Risk and Cardiovascular Events PDF Author: Salvatore Novo
Publisher: Bentham Science Publishers
ISBN: 1608052214

Pages : 72

Book Description
The simple assessment of atherosclerotic risk factors is not an accurate tool to predict the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in adults without past history of atherosclerotic disease. Preclinical atherosclerotic increases the global cardiovascular risk and should be evaluated for a better risk stratification. Intima-media thickness (IMT), reduced ankle-brachial pressure index (ABI) and impaired flow mediated dilatation (FMD) are independent markers of multifocal but subclinical atherosclerosis and result associated with an increased rate of cardiovascular events. Multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) may be a useful non-invasive technique to detect silent coronary disease (CAD) in patients with peripheral preclinical atherosclerosis. This ebook outlines “preclinical athersclerosis” and its markers in clinical practice. The ebook gives simple but clear information for a better stratification of global cardiovascular risk. The text serves as an important guide for medical professionals involved in the management of cardiovascular patients.

Disease Control Priorities, Third Edition (Volume 5)

Disease Control Priorities, Third Edition (Volume 5) PDF Author: Dorairaj Prabhakaran
Publisher: World Bank Publications
ISBN: 1464805202
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 466

Book Description
Cardiovascular, respiratory, and related conditions cause more than 40 percent of all deaths globally, and their substantial burden is rising, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Their burden extends well beyond health effects to include significant economic and societal consequences. Most of these conditions are related, share risk factors, and have common control measures at the clinical, population, and policy levels. Lives can be extended and improved when these diseases are prevented, detected, and managed. This volume summarizes current knowledge and presents evidence-based interventions that are effective, cost-effective, and scalable in LMICs.

Epidemiology and Prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases: A Global Challenge

This book provides a comprehensive epidemiological perspective on cardiovascular diseases and analysis of measures for their prevention and control in community and clinical settings. Perfect for both students and practitioners, the second edition includes over 300 tables, figures, and exhibits; and has been thoroughly updated to reflect the most recent research in the field. Epidemiology and Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease: A Global Challenge, Second Edition provides an in-depth examination of epidemiologic research and prevention measures for the full range of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). This authoritative text on the world’s leading causes of death describes in detail the nature of atherosclerotic and hypertensive diseases—including their determinants, prevention and control, as well as policies for intervention in community and clinical settings. This second edition is fully updated, more extensively referenced and expanded to include new information about the public health dimensions of CVD prevention, exploring the basis of public health decisions and the process by which decision-making bodies develop guidelines and recommendations. Epidemiology and Prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases: A Global Challenge, Second Edition is the essential text for any student or practitioner concerned with global cardiovascular health. The second edition includes: • The most up-to-date epidemiologic research, prevention measures, and policies • Fully revised content and expanded material • A comprehensive review of CVD research

Ethnic Diversities, Hypertension and Global Cardiovascular Risk

Ethnic Diversities, Hypertension and Global Cardiovascular Risk PDF Author: Pietro Amedeo Modesti

ISBN: 3319931482

Book Description
In the context of the most significant influx of migrants in European history, the objective of this book is to provide healthcare professionals with essential knowledge and skills to effectively treat and prevent cardiovascular diseases in ethnic minorities. Acknowledging that the scientific and cultural training of health professionals on the specific health needs of minority groups is still limited and likely biased, the book sheds light on the different health policies in European countries as well as epidemiologic data on cardiovascular events among migrants. In addition, it presents an in-depth analysis of potential ethnic-group-specific drivers of global cardiovascular risk within this new and challenging framework – as well as issues related to its prevention and treatment. The prevalence of hypertension, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, obesity, and metabolic syndrome is found to be higher among most minority groups than in the native population, yet their access to treatment and health services may be limited by cultural and language barriers. As health professionals are confronted with such intercultural challenges on a daily basis, specific training and dedicated publications are thus essential to accompany and foster a constructive development towards a pluralist and healthier society. This book addresses that need, offering a unique and revealing resource.

Multiple Risk Factors in Cardiovascular Disease

Multiple Risk Factors in Cardiovascular Disease PDF Author: Antonio M. Gotto Jr.

Book Description
This volume is a collection of the most significant contributions to the 4th International Symposium on MULTIPLE RISK FACTORS IN CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE: STRATEGIES OF PREVENTION OF CORONARY HEART DISEASE, CARDIAC F AlLURE, AND STROKE held in Washington, D. C. in April 1997. The meeting focused on the risk factors for cardiovascular disease and their interactions. The need for this symposium is based on the epidemiological, clinical, and biological evidence that individuals from industrialized countries often possess two or more risk factors which synergistically increase the global risk profile. This has become more evident in recent years with the increase in life expectancy of populations in the industrialized countries. The evidence that a combination of risk factors confers a very high risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, is of pivotal interest in the process of detection of patients who will benefit the most from pharmacological treatment. Many recent epidemiological data identifying the intrinsic and environmental factors contributing to the development of atherosclerosis are discussed. These results, in parallel with basic and clinical research, underline atherosclerosis as a complex and multifactorial process involving the influences of lipids, including lipoprotein subfractions, blood pressure rheologic forces, carbohydrate tolerance, and thrombogenic factors, including fibrinogen, tissue factor, PAl-I, and homocysteine. Furthennore, the risk associated with anyone of these risk factors varies widely depending on the level of the associated atherogenic risk factors. Hyper cholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia, for instance, are more common than would be expected by chance among hypertensive patients.

Book Description
The advances in the field of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease continue at an increasingly rapid pace and it is an arduous task for those not directly involved to keep up with the latest developments. The papers presented at the 7th Meeting on Atherosclerosis and Cardiovascular Disease, held in Bologna, as part of the Ninth Centenary of the foundation of the University of Bologna, have been collected together here with the aim of providing all the latest information for doctors and research workers concerned with this important branch of medicine. We are pleased to be able to thank all those who joined us in celebrating the oldest university in the world. The scientific contributions, of the highest level, are valid proof of the tradition of exchanging experiences and of the continual up-dating of knowledge in the different sectors of lipid metabolism, genetics, physiopathology, pathological anatomy, bio chemical and clinical diagnosis, diet, pharmacological and non-pharmacological ther apy. The numerous contributions made by authors in the field of epidemiology and the prevention of atherosclerosis were also fundamental since not only research centres but also doctors all over the world are engaged in the battle which was defined by the WHO, twenty-five years ago, as the most important epidemic of the modern age.
