A modified and enlarged version of the project report "English in India: Sociolinguistic and Social Psychological Perspectives (A Pilot Study)" submitted to the British Council, New Delhi in March 1995. A random sample of 1,128 informants from different capital cities and age groups, as well as in-depth interviews with 73 professionals, educators, and politicians were used to determine the status, role and function of English from the time it was introduced in India; to present a profile of the needs, attitudes, and motivation of its users; and to examine how young people visualize the space of English in tomorrow's India.
