Welfare or Welfare State?

Welfare or Welfare State? PDF Author: David Marsland
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 1349245763
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 282

Book Description
Throughout the modernized world, a massive, bureaucratic apparatus of state welfare has been built up since the 1940s. This book examines the major deficiencies of the welfare state: the incoherence of its underlying philosophy; its redundancy in an era of prosperity and progress; its costs; its inefficiency; and the harm it does to those it should help by driving them into underclass dependency. Practical proposals for radical reform are outlined, combining self-reliance, privatization, and a new deal for the deprived and disadvantaged.

Rethinking Welfare and the Welfare State

Rethinking Welfare and the Welfare State PDF Author: Bent Greve
Publisher: Edward Elgar Publishing
ISBN: 9781800885110
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 208

Book Description
This innovative book takes a unique approach to rethinking welfare states by considering two centrally interlinked issues: namely what is welfare, and what we should expect from welfare states now and in the future. Bent Greve critically considers thinking on the core elements of welfare states, how they should be ranked and how to recognise indicators of their direction of movement. Providing expert analysis of the historical development of welfare states and the challenges and pressures experienced both regionally and globally, this book argues for a new division of welfare states and a system for balancing old and new social risk. The investigation of dilemmas and the analysis of developing welfare states are particularly illuminating and informative. Greve provides a forward-thinking approach considering long-term stability and the challenges of inequality and poverty in different welfare regimes. He effectively combines new perspectives with attention to a strong public sector economy. With insightful new analysis this book will be an invaluable read for researchers and students of social policy and welfare states.

Pandora's Dilemma

Pandora's Dilemma PDF Author: David Stoesz
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0190669675
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 224

Book Description
What are the challenges facing social welfare in America? Theories of stakeholders, the policy process, electoral politics, the precariat, child welfare, online education, the devolution of the welfare state, and its sequel, the investment state, illuminate critical factors determining the future of social welfare as well as the professions. Beyond explaining social change, theories include applications for future research. After the turmoil of the 2016 election, Pandora's Dilemma is not only the first empirically-based theoretical explanation, but also a long-overdue illustration of the value of theory in social welfare. This book is essential reading for social welfare scholars trying to make sense of Brexit and the Trump presidency.

Welfare Reform in America

Welfare Reform in America PDF Author: P.M. Sommers
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400973896
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 262

Book Description
This is the second in a series of books growing out of the annual Mid dlebury College Conference on Economic Issues. The second confer ence, held in April 1980, focused on goals and realities of welfare reform. The objectives of the conference were threefold: (1) evaluation of the antipoverty effort so far; (2) discussion of welfare reform alternatives; and (3) prediction of how new initiatives would change work behavior and productivity. During the time this country has been engaged in a "war on poverty," two massive efforts to reform welfare, Richard M. Nixon's Family As sistance Plan (FAP) and Jimmy Carter's Program for Better Jobs and Income (PBJI), were proposed. Both defined national benefit levels and featured a negative income tax. Both measures were defeated in Congress. More modest efforts at reform have, however, changed the economic landscape. Because of the rapid growth in cash and in-kind transfer programs, income poverty is no longer the serious problem that it was in 1964. In fact, looking at the proliferation of programs and the substantial surge in participation rates, some politicians have even advocated a period of government retrenchment. In 1971, the governor of California vii viii INTRODUCTION proposed (and implemented) a major welfare reform in an attempt to stem the rapid growth of welfare caseloads that began in his state in 1967-68. He argued that savings from administrative improvements could be used to raise benefits for the "truly needy.

Welfare and the Welfare State

Welfare and the Welfare State PDF Author: Bent Greve
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317643941
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 235

Book Description
The welfare state plays a key role in people’s everyday lives in developed societies. At the same time, the welfare state is contested and there are constant discussions on how and to what degree the state should intervene, influence and have an impact on the development of society. Recent years have seen an accelerated transformation of the welfare state in the light of the global financial crisis, demographic change and changes in the perception of the state’s role in relation to social welfare. This raises fundamentally new issues related to social policy and welfare state analysis. This book provides: an introduction to the principles of welfare a conceptual framework necessary for understanding social policy at the macro-level a comparative approach to welfare states globally an overview of new ways to organise and steer welfare states an introduction to welfare state politics and underlying economic framework an account of equality and inequality in modern societies new directions for welfare states The book’s focus on core concepts and the variety of international welfare state regimes and mechanisms for delivering social policy provides a much needed introduction to the rapidly changing concept of welfare for students on social policy, social studies, sociology and politics courses.
