Book Description
Reflecting the World: A Guide to Incorporating Equity in Mathematics Teacher Education is a guide for mathematics teacher educators interested in incorporating equity concerns into their teaching. The book draws on the authors’ research and experience integrating issues of equity, diversity, and social justice into their work as mathematics teacher educators of preservice and inservice preK?9 teachers. Reflecting the World includes both a framework for integrating issues of equity into mathematics teacher education courses and professional development and example lessons. The lessons are organized by content area and include guidance for using them effectively. Elementary and middle grades pre?service teachers are often uncomfortable with mathematics, uncertain about their ability to teach it, and unsure of how it connects to the real world. For many preservice teachers a focus on the real world—and in particular on issues of equity, diversity, and social justice—is more engaging than their past experiences with mathematics and can help lessen their mathematical anxieties. Reflecting the World will assist teacher educators in designing and teaching mathematics content and methods courses in ways that support future teachers to see the relevance of mathematics to our world and in becoming critical, questioning citizens in an increasingly mathematical world. The book provides a set of tools for helping future teachers connect mathematics to the lives, interests, and political realities of an increasingly diverse student body, and in doing so it provides a meaningful answer to the question, “when will I ever use this?”

Evening Thoughts

Evening Thoughts PDF Author: Thomas Berry
Publisher: Catapult
ISBN: 157805186X
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 125

Book Description
Essays on our spiritual role in the fate of the planet from “the most provocative figure among the new breed of eco–theologians” (Newsweek). Among the contemporary voices for the Earth, none resonates like that of cultural historian Thomas Berry. His teaching and writings have inspired a generation’s thinking about humankind’s place in the Earth community and the universe, engendering widespread critical acclaim and a documentary film on his life and work. This new collection of essays, from various years and occasions, expands and deepens ideas articulated in his earlier writings and also breaks new ground. Berry opens our eyes to the full dimensions of the ecological crisis, framing it as a crisis of spiritual vision. Applying his formidable erudition in cultural history, science, and comparative religions, he forges a compelling narrative of creation and communion that reconciles modern evolutionary thinking and traditional religious insights concerning our integral role in Earth’s society. While sounding an urgent alarm at our current dilemma, Berry inspires us to reclaim our role as the consciousness of the universe and thereby begin to create a true partnership with the Earth community. With Evening Thoughts, this wise elder has lit another beacon to lead us home. “Thomas Berry is an exemplar in a tradition that includes a diverse group of spiritually radiant individuals (Gandhi, the monk Thomas Merton, the Lakota elder Black Elk), visionaries (Jacques Ellul, Terry Tempest Williams, Rachel Carson), and writers (Wendell Berry, Gary Snyder, Rebecca Solnit, Loren Eiseley).” —Barry Lopez, author of Arctic Dreams

In His Image

In His Image PDF Author: Michael J. Wilkins
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1532685815
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 220

Book Description
“A Disciple…will be like his teacher.” (Luke 6:40) What does it mean to be a follower of Jesus? The ultimate goal of discipleship is to be like the Teacher—to be like Jesus Himself. Every Christian wants to understand what that means. But even if we understand it, is it possible? Michael Wilkins asserts that it’s not only possible, it’s a life that all Christians are called to—not just a select few. So why do we so seldom experience it? As Wilkins points out, even the first followers of Jesus had a hard time grasping what it meant to be His disciples. Like them, our difficulty often lies in not clearly understanding who Jesus is, not recognizing the resources available to us as God’s children, or not believing who we are to be as Christ’s followers. But like the early disciples, our lives can radically change. If we want to follow Jesus, we can become like Him. “Jesus takes us exactly as He finds us,” writes Wilkins, “and transforms us into His likeness.” So come, learn what it means to walk with Jesus and reflect His image to the real world.

Reflecting Black

Reflecting Black PDF Author: Michael Eric Dyson
Publisher: U of Minnesota Press
ISBN: 0816621438
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 382

Book Description
From rap music to preaching, from Toni Morrison to Leonard Jeffries, from Michael Jackson to Michael Jordan, "Reflecting Black" explores the varied and complex dimensions of African-American culture. Through personal reflection, expository journalism, scholarly investigation, and even a sermon, Michael Eric Dyson grapples with and celebrates the diverse cultural expressions of contemporary black intellectuals, athletes, musicians, scholars, ministers, politicians, and activists, while at the same time probing and exposing the social and political realities of black cultural production. "Reflecting Black" investigates contemporary gospel music, the films of Spike Lee and John Singleton, contemporary grass roots leadership, Malcolm X, the books about the nature of the heroism of Martin Luther King, and the controversies arising from the Central Park jogger case. Pushing beyond insular debates about "positive" and "negative" treatments of black life, Dyson's work is both appreciative and critical in its assessment of the insights and blindnesses, as well as the strengths and weaknesses, of contemporary black culture. Michael Eric Dyson won the 1992 National Magazine Award for Black Journalists. His writing has appeared in many books, journals, newspapers and magazines. This book is intended for academics in the fields of cultural studies, African-American studies and American studies.
