Genetics and Evolution of Aquatic Organisms

Genetics and Evolution of Aquatic Organisms PDF Author: A. Beaumont
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9780412493706
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 566

Book Description
This volume brings together, for the first time, a wide range of up-to-the-minute and traditional techniques and approaches to the study of genetics of organisms living in freshwater or marine habitats. Carefully edited chapters are headed by broad review articles against which are set a number of more specific experience papers which demonstrate the breadth and range of approaches currently being undertaken.

Interactions and Adaptation Strategies of Marine Organisms

Interactions and Adaptation Strategies of Marine Organisms PDF Author: Andrew D. Naumov
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401719071
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 164

Book Description
This volume provides a refereed selection of the proceedings of the 31st European Marine Biology Symposium, held in St. Petersburg, Russia, in September 1996. State-of-the-art reviews and studies on adaptational processes in marine organisms such as adaptations to fluctuations in salinity, temperature, oxygen and pollutants which are reflected in different types of ecophysiological responses and interactions of marine organisms, including predation, parasitism, intraspecific competition and epibiosys were presented at the symposium proceedings. Research from both eastern and western Europe contributed to this project and during the symposium differences in scientific approaches and views between these two groups became apparent. The contents of this volume reflect these differences. Researchers and students in marine biology as well as those involved in coastal management and environmental studies will find this volume of interest.

Fouling Organisms of the Indian Ocean

Fouling Organisms of the Indian Ocean PDF Author: Rachakonda Nagabhushanam
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1000123790
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 551

Book Description
Marine fouling organisms attach permanently to ship hulls and underwater parts of offshore structures. All maritime nations spend millions, even billions of dollars to get rid of them. Believing that a pooling of knowledge of all aspects of the basic biology of fouling organisms and a re-examination of control technology methods are steps needed for the solution of this problem, the aim of the book is to highlight recent advances in fouling control technology and, at the same time, provide basic information on the biology of fouling organisms found in the Indian Ocean. The book begins by presenting an overview of research done in India on the marine fouling organisms and wood-borers of the Indian Ocean. It them moves through chapters dealing with the seccession of fouling communities, chemical cues in larval settlement, epibiosis, methods of fouling prevention, functional morphology, and distribution of foulers in Indian waters.

Marine Genetics

Marine Genetics PDF Author: Antonio M. Solé-Cava
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 940172184X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 224

Book Description
Our current knowledge of marine organisms and the factors affecting their ecology, distribution and evolution has been revolutionised by the use, in the last 20 years, of molecular population genetics tools. This book is the result of a meeting of world-leading experts, in Rio de Janeiro, where the state of the art of this field was reviewed. Topics covered include the molecular analysis of bio-invasions, the recent developments in marine biotechnology, the factors affecting levels of genetic variation and population structure in marine organisms and their application to conservation biology, fisheries and aquaculture. This is the first book dedicated to the genetic study of marine organisms. It will be very useful to biology students, scientists and anyone working or simply interested in areas such as marine biology, zoology, ecology, and population and molecular genetics.

Migrations and Dispersal of Marine Organisms

Migrations and Dispersal of Marine Organisms PDF Author: M.B. Jones
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401722765
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 261

Book Description
This book represents the Proceedings of the 37th European Marine Biology Symposium, held in Reykjavík, Iceland, 5-9 August 2002. The main themes of the symposium were Migrations and Dispersal of Marine Organisms. These themes are highly relevant today. There is widespread man-aided dispersal (e.g. by ballast water) of marine plants and animals, which may have substantial effects on the regions receiving new species. The new introductions may result in reduced diversity of plants and animals and may affect natural resources in the countries receiving toxic algae and other foreign elements. Studies of changes in distribution and dispersal of marine animals and plants are also highly relevant with reference to the changing climate taking place. The study of dispersal has recently gained new impetus with the discovery of the remarkable communities found on isolated hydrothermal vents and cold water seeps in the world's oceans.
