Second Philosophy

Second Philosophy PDF Author: Penelope Maddy
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0199273669
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 461

Book Description
Many philosophers these days consider themselves naturalists, but it's doubtful any two of them intend the same position by the term. In this book, Penelope Maddy describes and practises a particularly austere form of naturalism called 'Second Philosophy'. Without a definitive criterion for what counts as 'science' and what doesn't, Second Philosophy can't be specified directly - 'trust only the methods of science!' or some such thing - so Maddy proceeds instead by illustratingthe behaviours of an idealized inquirer she calls the 'Second Philosopher'. This Second Philosopher begins from perceptual common sense and progresses from there to systematic observation, active experimentation, theory formation and testing, working all the while to assess, correct and improve hermethods as she goes. Second Philosophy is then the result of the Second Philosopher's investigations.Maddy delineates the Second Philosopher's approach by tracing her reactions to various familiar skeptical and transcendental views (Descartes, Kant, Carnap, late Putnam, van Fraassen), comparing her methods to those of other self-described naturalists (especially Quine), and examining a prominent contemporary debate (between disquotationalists and correspondence theorists in the theory of truth) to extract a properly second-philosophical line of thought. She then undertakes to practise SecondPhilosophy in her reflections on the ground of logical truth, the methodology, ontology and epistemology of mathematics, and the general prospects for metaphysics naturalized.

The Philosophy of Being Second

The Philosophy of Being Second PDF Author: Xingyun
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780964261273
Category : Buddhism
Languages : en
Pages : 180

Book Description
How often have you heard someone say, "My father always said...or "My coach used to say...? Chances are, the best teachers you've had are the ones you can still quote. The ability to distill a lot of wisdom into a few words is the hallmark of great teaching. A well-placed proverb, quote, or pithy saying can focus and clarify one's thinking marvelously. Venerable Master Hsing Yun, like all great teachers, has also been a great student. Over the past few years, he has written about a collection of one hundred quotes, things he heard from his teachers, his fellow students, ancient Chan masters, modern lay devotees--in short, from any and every possible source of wisdom. By sharing these sayings with us, describing the context in which he heard them, and reflecting on their meaning and importance for good living, he opens a window into his life, as well as ours.

Second Manifesto for Philosophy

Second Manifesto for Philosophy PDF Author: Alain Badiou
Publisher: Polity
ISBN: 0745648614
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 200

Book Description
Twenty years ago, Alain Badiou's first Manifesto for Philosophy rose up against the all-pervasive proclamation of the "end" of philosophy. In lieu of this problematic of the end, he put forward the watchword: "one more step". The situation has considerably changed since then. Philosophy was threatened with obliteration at the time, whereas today it finds itself under threat for the diametrically opposed reason: it is endowed with an excessive, artificial existence. "Philosophy" is everywhere. It serves as a trademark for various media pundits. It livens up cafés and health clubs. It has its magazines and its gurus. It is universally called upon, by everything from banks to major state commissions, to pronounce on ethics, law and duty. In essence, "philosophy" has now come to stand for nothing other than its most ancient enemy: conservative ethics. Badiou's second manifesto therefore seeks to demoralize philosophy and to separate it from all those "philosophies" that are as servile as they are ubiquitous. It demonstrates the power of certain eternal truths to illuminate action and, as such, to transport philosophy far beyond the figure of "the human" and its "rights". There, well beyond all moralism, in the clear expanse of the idea, life becomes something radically other than survival.

Philosophy's Second Revolution

Philosophy's Second Revolution PDF Author: David S. Clarke
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 254

Book Description
Clarke proposes a conception of philosophy that provides an alternative to the reductions of materialism and the search for normative principles. Philosophy's proper role is to describe similarities and differences among differing levels of language, specifically the familiar level of discourse within an ordinary language shared by all and the specialized discourses of social institutions such as science, law, and the arts. By constructing a logical framework in which these comparisons and contrasts can be made, philosophy performs the indispensable role of promoting the integration of disparate elements of our culture.
