Bridge Resource Management

Bridge Resource Management PDF Author: Kalyan Chatterjea

ISBN: 9789814591683
Category : Merchant marine
Languages : en
Pages : 88

Book Description
This publication on Bridge Resource Management - Teamwork and Leadership (BRM-TL) covers the non-technical skill requirements of a bridge-team as specified in the IMO's STCW Tables A-II/1 and A-II/2 for both operational and management levels (including 2010 Manila Amendments). The book is meant to support a simulator-based course covering these requirements. On completion of the BRM-TL course, as detailed in this book, participants are expected to gain enhanced knowledge in the areas of effective management and optimum utilisation of all resources, required for the safe and successful conduct of a ship's voyage. BRM-TL course emphasises the non-technical skills of the bridge-team, which include managing human factors, effective communications, processes of team-building and leadership. To manage bridge processes, the book provides guidance on situational awareness, including team situational awareness, decision-making, contingency planning, as well as task management covering fatigue and workload planning. Additionally, this book introduces the concept of behavioural markers for assessing these soft skills to establish performance levels during a simulated exercise. Examples of behavioural markers applicable in a full-mission simulator-based exercise are also included.

Marine Simulation and Ship Manoeuvrability

Marine Simulation and Ship Manoeuvrability PDF Author: M.S. Chislett
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 135143361X
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 660

Book Description
Real-time, interactive ship simulators limped onto the scene, in the wake of flight simulators, some years ago. The maritime industries have a long history of conservatism, but this is now changing rapidly. The information age has also swept over ships and shipping, and has been taken to heart to such an extent that, for example, flight simulators now cooperate with ship simulators and import useful new concepts and methodologies. The more than 50 papers contained in this book show what and why. Although traditionally conservative, the marine world is also traditionally international and this has not changed. The papers in the book are by leading authors from all over the world and provide a detailed snap-shot of the rapidly advancing state-of-the-art, together with pointers to the future. The overall theme of MARSIM '96 and therefore also of this book is: Vessel manouevrability and marine simulation research, training and assessment, and includes original papers on topics such as bridge resource management, distant learning and simulators coupled via The Internet, virtual reality, neural networks, rudder-propeller hydrodynamics, prime mover models, squat in shallow water, and many more.

Maritime Work Law Fundamentals: Responsible Shipowners, Reliable Seafarers

Maritime Work Law Fundamentals: Responsible Shipowners, Reliable Seafarers PDF Author: Iliana Christodoulou-Varotsi
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3540727515
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 823

Book Description
The importance of international maritime labour law - both as a component of - ternational maritime law, and in socio-political and economic terms - has been recognised by the IMO International Maritime Law Institute for a number of years. Indeed, the Institute has annually organised a course on maritime labour law with the participation of inter alia the International Maritime Organization, the - ternational Labour Organization, the International Transport Workers’ Federation, and the German Shipowners’ Association. It was therefore a great pleasure when the authors invited me to introduce their forthcoming monograph on Maritime Work Law Fundamentals: Responsible S- powners Reliable Seafarers. As the title suggests, a fundamental challenge of this branch of international maritime law is to achieve a balance between the interests of the two main stakeholders. Institutionally, the effort to achieve this balance dates back a number of decades with its genesis mainly found in the work of the International Labour Organization. It has to be said that whilst this effort achieved great progress, it has led to a haphazard, plethora of legal instruments.

Techniques for Ship Handling and Bridge Team Management

Techniques for Ship Handling and Bridge Team Management PDF Author: Hiroaki Kobayashi
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000706923
Category : Transportation
Languages : en
Pages : 269

Book Description
Hiroaki Kobayashi has trained 1500 mariners in ship handling over twenty years and he has systematized the methods of safe navigation into nine elemental techniques. Taking a rigorous and scientific look at good practice and attitudes, good seamanship can be viewed as a series of concrete technical functions, which can be in terms of competencies. By giving proper attention to human factors the conditions for maintaining system safety can be defined, and the interaction of human competencies and environmental conditions and their effects on system safety can be recognised. System safety in turn depends on good bridge team management, with particular emphasis on communication, cooperation and leadership – communication for the exchange of information, cooperation to smooth team activities, and leadership to ensure that each member of the team performs successfully.

The World of the Seafarer

The World of the Seafarer PDF Author: Victor Oyaro Gekara
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030498255
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 194

Book Description
This open access book constitutes an ethnographic mosaic which depicts the contextual complexities of the life and work of seafarers who are employed in the international merchant cargo fleet. The collection is based upon the observations and interviews of researchers in multiple disciplines. It is woven together to offer a richly detailed insight into the ways in which a complex global industry operates internationally. The book covers issues to do with career decisions and recruitment, gender, life and work on board multinational vessels, health and safety issues, the regulation of the industry, shipboard roles and role conflict, and the representation of workers. It will be of considerable interest to all students globally who are studying for professional seafaring qualifications, to graduate students studying for masters courses in ship and port management, and to welfare professionals and policy makers. It is of special interest to those connected to the shipping industry who specialize in issues relating to 'the human element' and will serve as a paradigm defining text in this area.
