Book Description
This report examines the reasons for the demise of Africa's mining performance, and proposes a strategy for accelerating mining sector growth so that the sector can make a greater contribution to economic activity in the region. The report draws heavily on the experience of World Bank mining work in Africa as well as other regions. The report includes an analysis of mining legislation and taxation arrangements in five countries which have been relatively successful in attracting new private sector mining investment. It also makes use of the results of a survey of the decision making processes and criteria of over forty mining companies regarding exploration and investment in developing countries. At various stages, key insights and findings from the report have been reviewed and discussed on a selective basis with industry experts, potential investors, interested government officials and the academic community.

Africa's Mineral Fortune

Africa's Mineral Fortune PDF Author: Saleem H. Ali
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 0429884583
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 431

Book Description
For too long Africa's mineral fortune has been lamented as a resource curse that has led to conflict rather than development for much of the continent. Yet times are changing and the opportunities to bring technical expertise on modern mining alongside appropriate governance mechanisms for social development are becoming more accessible in Africa. This book synthesizes perspectives from multiple disciplines to address Africa’s development goals in relation to its mineral resources. The authors cover ways of addressing a range of policy challenges, environmental concerns, and public health impacts and also consider the role of globalization within the extractive industries. Academic research is coupled with key field vignettes from practitioners exemplifying case studies throughout. The book summarizes the challenges of natural resource governance, suggesting ways in which mining can be more effectively managed in Africa. By providing an analytical framework it highlights the essential intersection between natural and social sciences, central to efficient and effective harnessing of the potential for minerals and mining to be a contributor to positive development in Africa. It will be of interest to policy makers, industry professionals, and researchers in the extractive industries, as well as to the broader development community.

Book Description

All the metal and mineral commodities rose from their low point in 2001-02 periods to an all time high in 2008. Although the global recession in 2008 severely affected their business global mining companies resumed their growth and surpassed their previous highs by the end of 2010. However, standing at this crucial juncture, they face major opportunities and threats in their near future. This report attempts to address these growth opportunities and major hurdles of the mining sector. Further, efforts have been made to understand the serious implications of policy changes by governments and the rise of the emerging markets. The key management strategies and business growth models adopted by the largest mining companies such as BHP Billiton, Royal Dutch Shell and Rio Tinto have been discussed in detail.

Mining in Africa

Mining in Africa PDF Author: Bonnie Campbell
Publisher: IDRC
ISBN: 074532939X
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 290

Book Description
The continent of Africa is rich in minerals needed by Western economies, but rather than forming the basis for economic growth the mining industry contributes very little to African development Investigating the impact of the 2003 Extractive Industries Review on a number of African countries, the contributors find the root of the problem in the controls imposed on the African countries by the IMF and World Bank. They aim to convince academics, governments and industry that regulation needs to be reformed to create a mining industry favourable towards social, economic and environmental development. The book takes a multidisciplinary approach and provides a historical perspective of each country, making it ideal for students of development studies and development organizations.

Book Description
The Geological and Mineral Information System (GMIS) Strategy is proposed by the African Mineral Development Centre (AMDC) to facilitate the strengthening of the African production, management and dissemination of geological and mineral information (GMI) in connection with the implementation of the African Mining Vision (AMV) and the domestication of the Country Mining Vision (CMV).The Strategy is expected to serve as a guide for the AMDC and its four implementing partners consisting of the African Union Commission (AUC), African Development Bank (AfDB), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) to provide strategic operational support for AU Member States and their Geological Survey Organizations (GSOs) and centres of excellence to improve GMIS, which will encourage investment across the whole Mineral Value Chain, facilitate price discovery for governments, support decision-making in contract negotiation and mining development and facilitate broad development processes. The GMIS Strategy sees geological and geospatial information as crucial for several important legal, economic, social and environmental applications in mining and broad development processes in Africa. It is planned to coordinate, set direction, create alignment, build commitment, promote collaboration, establish trust, mobilize supporters, and facilitate activities from different GMIS initiatives in the continent.
