Divine Mysteries in the Enochic Tradition

Divine Mysteries in the Enochic Tradition PDF Author: Andrei A. Orlov
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3111201929
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 264

Book Description
The book represents an in-depth investigation of acquisition, cultivation, and transmission of divine mysteries in Jewish apocalyptic and mystical accounts by focusing on the developments found in early Enochic writings. These accounts deal both with revelations unveiled by God and angels to the patriarch Enoch and with illicit transmission of divine knowledge by the rogue group of the fallen angels, known as the Watchers. Orlov argues that the map of otherworldly knowledge revealed to Enoch inversely mirrors the map of illicit revelations given by the fallen Watchers to humankind. The study suggests that one of the possible objectives for the parallelism is that, by revealing to Enoch the same divine mysteries that were earlier transmitted by the Watchers, God attempts to mitigate the corruption caused by the fallen angels’ illicit instructions. This book will be of interest not only for scholars specializing in historical and religious areas, but also for experts in the fields of anthropology, philosophy, sociology, psychology, and gender theory; it discusses several aspects of early and late Jewish religious epistemologies that elucidate the ideological context for the construction and affirmation of social roles and identities in various Jewish milieus.

Ancient Jewish Historians and the German Reich

Ancient Jewish Historians and the German Reich PDF Author: Daniel R Schwartz
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3110765349
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 200

Book Description
Apart from an opening survey of modern study of ancient Jewish history, which emphasizes the foundational role of German-Jewish scholars, the studies united in this volume apply philological methods to the writings of four of them: Heinrich Graetz, Isaak Heinemann, Elias Bickerman(n), and Abraham Schalit. In each case, it is argued that some seemingly trivial anomaly or infelicity, in a publication about such ancient characters as Antiochus Epiphanes, Herod, and Josephus, points to the way in which the historian constructed, and revised, his understanding of the Jews' situation under Greeks or Romans in light of his perception of the Jews' situation under the Second or Third Reich. The collection also includes a study that focuses on a Jewish medievalist, Philipp Jaffé, and unravels the indirect but inexorable process that led from a scholarly feud about the editing of medieval Latin texts, in the 1860s, to the "Berlin Antisemitism Dispute" (Berliner Antisemitismusstreit) of 1879-1881, which is commonly viewed as the opening act of modern German antisemitism.

The Qumran Paradigm

The Qumran Paradigm PDF Author: Gwynned de Looijer
Publisher: SBL Press
ISBN: 0884140725
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 284

Book Description
A fundamentally revisionist approach that leaves behind the constructed social reality of a “sectarian” paradigm Gwynned de Looijer reexamines the key hypotheses that have driven scholars’ understandings of the Dead Sea Scrolls, the archaeological site of Khirbet Qumran, and the textual descriptions of the Essenes. She demonstrates that foundational hypotheses regarding a sect at Qumran have heavily influenced the way the texts found in the surrounding caves are interpreted. De Looijer’s approach abandon’s those assumptions to illustrate that the Dead Sea Scrolls reflect a wider range of backgrounds reflecting the many diverse forms of Judaism that existed in the Second Temple period. Features: In depth analysis of 4QMMT Reevaluation of the concept of dualism as it has been applied to Qumran texts Charts and tables illustrate complex theories, concepts, and connections
