Take-Home Homilies

Take-Home Homilies PDF Author: L. Patrick Carroll
Publisher: Outskirts Press
ISBN: 9781977208644

Book Description
If you ask Pat Carroll how long it took to write this book he will respond "82 Years," a lifetime of reflection on scripture and life, blending together the stories of Jesus and the real-life questions and struggles we all face. A Jesuit priest for 33 years, Pat was a pastor, a teacher, a retreat director immersed in the lives of thousands of people and their search for meaning, for faith, for hope, for an increased ability to love. The past twenty years as a married man have added texture. His homilies are food for personal and/or group reflection. Each is part of Pat's life-long effort to "tell the story of Jesus, over and over, until we get it right!" Drawing on his extensive experience as a Jesuit priest, pastor and retreat leader, Patrick Carroll has now added to his published books this collection of homilies covering the full liturgical cycle. While the readings may be familiar, Carroll's treatment of them is unfailingly novel and imaginative, especially in the vivid ways he brings Jesus and His message into the world of today. This is a treasure of spiritual reading. (G. Donald Maloney teaches theology at Xavier University in Cincinnati, OH. ) As a Roman Catholic woman priest I have enjoyed reading Patrick Carroll's homilies and used parts of them in my own preaching. He brings the gospel into our everyday living situations. I look forward eagerly to having all three cycles bound together in one book. (Rev. Dr. Juanita Cordero RCWP, San Jose, CA.) I have been using Pat Carroll's homilies to help me with my own preaching for the past three years. Pat combines solid pastoral and biblical theology with wisdom born from experience with real people and an ability to find God working in many situations. I highly recommend his work both as a homiletic aid and for personal prayer. (Peter Henriot, S.J., founder of The Center for Concern and 30 years in Zambia-Malawi as a pastor and also national consultant on Social Justice and Educational issues.)

Wheels of Light

Wheels of Light PDF Author: Fr. Con Buckley
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 1496984110
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 724

Book Description
These introductions, homilies, reflections, and prayers are not theory, but a priest's experience of a liturgical approach that works. The testimony of the faithful who say, "what a lovely mass..what a moving homily, could I have a copy?", is his touchstone. So is the popularity of the homilies on his internet, web, "A Priest Reflects". This book works because it treats each Sunday liturgy as a seamless robe of rich interwoven themes. Thus, the introduction identifies the links between the Old Testament reading and the Gospel, and adds any gems from the second reading. Then, when the scripture is read, people, clued in to the overall import, listen more profitably. The homily elaborates the key themes from the readings further, and relates them to life, with stories, anecdotes, newspaper headlines, references to common events etc. The aim is that the Word should light up our contemporary experience.. The final doxology reinforces the point that the Word is life for this world, not just the next; The creed introduction summarizes the whole, and the prayers carry that on into petitions for church leaders, civil authorities, youth, the sick, the dead, and special needs. There are special prayers for our youth, that gaps in our congregations there will be bridged. And the presiding minister should add other topical issues of the day. The reflection after holy communion again reinforces the overall message, but also leaves the people of God with something spicy and memorable to take home. So, all in all, this book should light up our masses, or services, and make them gospel based, relevant, inspirational, and focused.. The homilies are timed at about five minutes, people's normal attention span. So don't miss out on this innovative book. Buy it, and it will light up your Sunday mass, and provide spiritual food for the following week.

Prayer Takes Us Home

Prayer Takes Us Home PDF Author: Gerhard Lohfink; Translated by Linda M. Maloney
Publisher: Liturgical Press
ISBN: 0814688063
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 224

Book Description
A lot of people would like to learn to pray all over again. Others are not so sure they ought to pray. They want to know whether prayer will help them and, more than that, whether it will be of any use at all to our world. This book gives an answer-not in the form of glib instructions, but by introducing the reader to the theology of prayer. It refers again and again to the Bible, especially the Psalms. At the same time, it speaks about personal experiences as well. Gerhard Lohfink writes in inviting, easy-to-read language, answering questions such as: "To whom do we pray?" "Does it make any sense to ask for things in prayer?" "What happens in the Eucharistic Prayer?" "What is so special about the Psalms?" "How can I practice Christian meditation?" This book offers an inviting approach to Christian prayer.

The Books of Homilies

The Books of Homilies PDF Author: Gerald Bray
Publisher: James Clarke & Company
ISBN: 0227905113
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 529

Book Description
The two Books of Homilies, along with the Book of Common Prayer and the Ordinal, have long been basic documents of the Church of England, and are valuable in showing how Anglican doctrine shifted during the Reformation, as well as being of considerable historical importance. The first book, published in 1547, early in the reign of Edward VI, was partly, though not entirely, the work of Archbishop Thomas Cranmer, and the inspiration appears to have been his. This was intended to raise the standards of preaching by offering model ser mons covering particular doctrinal and pastoral themes, either to be read (particularly by unlicensed clergy) or to provide preachers with additional material for their own sermons. The success of the venture led Bishop EdmundBonner, who had contributed to Cranmer's book, to produce his own Book of Homilies in 1555, during the reign of Queen Mary. The Second Book of Homilies, published in 1563 (and in a revised form in 1571) appears in turn to have been influenced by both Cranmer's and Bonner's books. The present edition brings together all three books, edited and introduced by Revd Dr Gerald Bray.

The First Book of Homilies

The First Book of Homilies PDF Author: Lee Gatiss
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781739937607
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 202

Book Description
The Homilies were originally published in 1547, to help reform and renew the Church of England in the biblical faith of the Reformation. This series of sermons was written to enable often rather uneducated ministers, teach and explain the essence of the Christian faith from the pulpits of the land. They unfold the doctrines of scripture, sin, salvation, and Christian living with clarity and verve. This is what makes returning to the Homilies-now, for the first time, updated in modern English-such an invigorating and life-giving thing to do today.
