Techniques in Free Radical Research

Techniques in Free Radical Research PDF Author: A.T. Diplock
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 9780080858913
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 290

Book Description
Free radical species are generally short-lived due to their high reactivity and thus direct measurement and identification are often impossible. ESR is the only technique which has the potential for direct detection of radicals but in biological systems even these must be trapped by a spin-trapping agent. Thus most investigations involve recognition of indicators of the presence of radicals in vivo or "FOOTPRINTS" of radical-mediated damage. Techniques in Free Radical Research assembles and critically assesses the most relevant and reliable experimental approaches used towards the measurement of radicals and radical-mediated damage in chemical systems, in cells and in tissues under the following six headings: a) Footprints of DNA damage, b) Footprints of protein damage, c) Footprints of lipid peroxidation, d) Footprints of antioxidant consumption, e) Footprints via indirect radical assays, and f) Footprints via the availability of transition metal complexes.

Handbook Methods For Oxygen Radical Research

Handbook Methods For Oxygen Radical Research PDF Author: Robert A. Greenwald
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1351081373
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 467

Book Description
This volume is divided into five sections. Section I deals with preparative methodology for isolation and purification of the components of the oxy radical experimental systems use most frequently, including all three forms of SOD and several other important scavengers. Section II provides the experimenter with a choice of a dozen oxy radical generating systems which can be used for testing of scavengers or for evaluation of the effects of oxy radicals on target tissues. The reader will note that in this section, as well as in most of the rest of the volume, the orientation is primarily biochemical, biologic, and medical, rather than pure chemistry or pure physics. Nevertheless, the techniques are widely applicable to a variety of disciplines.

Radical Research

Radical Research PDF Author: John Schostak
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134149484
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 304

Book Description
Radical Research explores the view that research is not a neutral tool to be employed without bias in the search for truth. Rather the radical roots of research are to be seen in the focus on freedom and emancipation from blind allegiance to tradition, ‘common sense’, religion, or powerful individuals and organisations. Radical Research introduces and draws upon leading contemporary debates and data gathered from a diversity of funded projects in; health, education, police training, youth and community, schools, business, and the use of information technology. This book presents a radical view of research in a way that enables both beginner and the experienced professional researcher to explore its approaches in the formation of their own views and practices. It progressively leads the reader from discussions of case studies to critical explorations of the philosophical and methodological concepts, theories and arguments that are central to contemporary debates. In essence, this book shows how to design, develop and write radical research under conditions where ‘normal’ research rules apply and it offers a ground-breaking and proven alternative to traditional research techniques.

Free Radicals

Free Radicals PDF Author: Neville A. Punchard
Publisher: IRL Press
ISBN: 9780199635597
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 310

Book Description
With the recognition that oxygen and nitrogen radicals are involved in normal cell metabolism, free radical research has begun to feature in most disciplines in the life sciences. Increasingly, their implication in a number of human disease processes is being accepted, altough conclusive evidence is lacking in many instances, partly due to the difficulties in detecting and measuring free radicals that have lifetimes measured in microseconds. This book outlines the latest techniques for quantifying radicals and their effects, and features detailed protocols, hints, and tips for success, troubleshooting comments, sample data, and key literature citations.

DNA and Free Radicals

DNA and Free Radicals PDF Author: Barry Halliwell
Publisher: Prentice Hall PTR
ISBN:
Category : Active oxygen
Languages : en
Pages : 366

Book Description
Written by renowned biologists and medical scientists specializing in the field, this volume offers a comprehensive account of the role of oxidative stress and DNA damage in human disease. Emphasizes the role played by free radicals; examines the fundamental mechanisms underlying the pathology of human diseases; shows how DNA is an important target in cellular damage; and outlines the pioneering studies relating to the chemistry of DNA damage. MARKETS: " For research and development personnel in academia and industry involved in investigating drugs and toxic compounds; and for pharmacologists, pathologists, oncologists, chemotherapists, biochemists, chemists, physiologists, biologists, and all those interested in DNA or free radical research.

Pages : 537

Book Description
Addressing a number of the controversies on antioxidant testing methods, this book provides guidance on what methods are most appropriate for different situations, how results are interpreted and what can be inferred from the data.

Free Radical Research in Cancer

Free Radical Research in Cancer PDF Author: Ana Čipak Gašparović
Publisher: MDPI
ISBN: 3039360884
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 192

Book Description
Cancer is a great challenge to efficient therapy due to biological diversity. Disturbed oxidative homeostasis in cancer cells certainly contributes to differential therapy response. Further, one of the hallmarks of cancer cells is adaptation which includes fine tuning of the cellular metabolic and signalling pathways as well as transcription profiles. There are several factors which contribute to the tumor diversity and therapy response, and oxidative stress is certainly one of them. Changes in oxygen levels due to hypoxia/reoxygenation during tumor growth modulate antioxidative patterns finally supporting increased cell diversity and adaptation to stressing conditions. Additionally, cancer chemotherapy based on ROS production can also induce also adaptation. To counteract these negative effects natural products are often used for their antioxidant activities as well as photodynamic therapy supported by novel chemosensitizers. Understanding of possible pathways which can trigger antioxidant defence at a certain time during cancer development can also provide possible strategies in fighting cancer.

Carbon-Centered Free Radicals and Radical Cations

Carbon-Centered Free Radicals and Radical Cations PDF Author: Malcolm D. Forbes
