Book Description
Excerpt from The Expansion of Rural Life: The Social Psychology of Rural Development Three rural traditions have contributed to the determination of our national life, that of the South, that of the North, and that of the Frontier. The planter, the farmer, and the speculator differed in their economic conditions and, therefore, in their psychology. This book is concerned with the farmer and his community. In the United States most farmers live in the open country around a village as their trading and social center. Because of this intimate relation between village and country a study of rural psychology includes that of the village. This book is a study of rural development. It deals with the psychological processes of rural development. Such a study inevitably involves much that is not psychological. Forms of organization that have psychological significance must be described but I have limited this description to what seemed clearly to serve a psychological purpose. This book is the second of a series on rural development. The first, Our Rural Heritage, had to do with the rural population of New York State in the first period of development, that is, up to about 1874. This book continues the analysis from that date to the present. Up to the last quarter of the nineteenth century the prevailing attitudes and beliefs were much the same as they had been from the beginning. Then began an expansion of rural life which has continued to the present time. Two periods of this expansion may be distinguished. The first extends from 1874 to 1900. In 1874 the third generation from the post-revolutionary settlers had come to maturity and had inherited the wealth accumulated by previous generations. Railroads had come to ramify through the state and this brought the rural districts into closer contact with the cities. The depression of 1874-1878 was followed by agricultural prosperity, and also by a notable development of manufacturing in the villages and cities. Toward the end of the first period of expansion the village factories began to close and manufacturing to center in the cities. The Sociology of Rural Life

The Sociology of Rural Life PDF Author: Sam Hillyard
Publisher: Berg
ISBN: 184788623X
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 224

Book Description
From fox-hunting to farming, the vigor with which rural activities and living are defended overturns received notions of a sleepy and complacent countryside. Alongside these developments, the rise of the organic food movement has helped to revitalize an already politicized rural population. Over the years 'rural life' has been defined, redefined and eventually fallen out of fashion as a sociological concept - in contrast to urban studies, which has flourished. This much-needed reappraisal calls for its reinterpretation in light of the profound changes affecting the countryside. First providing an overview of rural sociology, Hillyard goes on to offer contemporary case studies that clearly demonstrate the need for a reinvigorated rural sociology. Tackling a range of contentious issues, this book offers a new model for rural sociology and reassesses its role in contemporary society. Chinese Economic Development

Chinese Economic Development PDF Author: Yinxing Hong
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000399184
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 286

Book Description
The book provides a meticulous analysis of economic development and concomitant problems in China since the late 1970s and advances suggestions on further economic modernisation and transition from both theoretical and practical angles. Based on theories from development economics and solid empirical studies, the authors, two renowned Chinese economists, provide a perceptive analysis of the Chinese development model in the post-Mao era. They shed light on questions that have perplexed many: How can China sustain the rapid growth of the past 40 years? Is there a unique "China path" to economic progress? They argue compellingly that China’s development model has to switch from a manufacturing-driven one to a brand-new approach, centring on scientific and technical innovation and the integration of its existing economic structure into an increasingly complex global economy. Such transformation will help overcome the "middle-income trap" while addressing other institutional and economic challenges. The book will appeal to students, scholars and policymakers interested in the Chinese and global economies, as well as transnational studies in the post-COVID-19 world. General readers willing to obtain a grasp of Chinese economic development from the insider’s perspective will also find it useful.
