Hidden History of the Finger Lakes

Hidden History of the Finger Lakes PDF Author: Patti Unvericht
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 1467138193
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 128

Book Description
New York's Finger Lakes region is filled with compelling characters, tragic disasters and fascinating mysteries. Famed daredevil Sam Patch, known as the Yankee Leaper, thrilled audiences at Niagara Falls but took his last jump into the Genesee River with his pet black bear, plummeting to his death. The first ever Memorial Day was celebrated in Waterloo in 1866 and inspired a nation to adopt the holiday. Seneca Lake claims its fair share of ships, including the Onondaga, which was blown up with dynamite as part of a spectacle to commemorate the sinking of the USS Maine. Author Patti Unvericht reveals the forgotten history of the Finger Lakes region.

Contaminants of the Great Lakes

Contaminants of the Great Lakes PDF Author: Jill Crossman
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030578747
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 268

Book Description
This book reviews the globally important freshwater resource of the Great Lakes, which is currently threatened by contaminants that compromise water quality and impact its ecological and economic health. Divided into four parts, this volume covers historic, current and emerging sources of contamination from heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants to microplastics; and identifies their ecological impacts. Due to factors ranging from rapidly changing land use practices, climate change and our emerging understanding of their impact on biological, chemical and physical interactions, the effectiveness of management strategies has proven highly variable. Continued enhancements in the rate of lake recovery are required to sustain the health of the Great Lakes. Accordingly, the book also explores recent advances in contaminant detection, along with future steps forward in lake management approaches. Revealing our current knowledge gaps and providing a roadmap towards sustainable solutions, the book offers a valuable asset for scientists, managers and the public alike.

Further Limnological Observations on the Finger Lakes of New York (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Edward Asahel Birge
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780656904938
Category : Science

Pages : 50

Book Description
Excerpt from Further Limnological Observations on the Finger Lakes of New York The Bureau of Fisheries authorized a second expedition to the New York lakes in July and August of 1918, in order to apply these newer methods to them. The following paper reports the results of the observations. The authors are indebted to Hobart College, Geneva, for the free use of its labora tories during their stay on the lakes, and to Prof. E. H. Eaton, of the same college, for unwearied assistance in their work. Much of the success which was reached was due to this aid. All recorded series of temperatures between 191 1 and 1918 were taken by Prof Eaton, as also were those taken after August 1, 1918. This report comes from both of its authors, as was the case with their former paper on the same subject. Mr. Juday, however, has prepared the part which deals with the plankton and Mr. Birge that-_which. Relates to temperatures and transmission of radiation.
