Record of the Transmission of Illumination

Record of the Transmission of Illumination PDF Author: T. Griffith Foulk
Publisher: University of Hawaii Press
ISBN: 0824891767
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 613

Book Description
The first book of this two-volume set consists largely of an annotated translation of the Record of the Transmission of Illumination (Denkōroku 傳光録) by Zen Master Keizan Jōkin 瑩山紹瑾 (1264–1325), presented together with the original Japanese text on which the English translation is based. That text is the recension of the Denkōroku published in Shūten Hensan Iinkai 宗典編纂委員会, ed., Taiso Keizan Zenji senjutsu Denkōroku 太祖瑩山禅師撰述伝光録 (Tokyo: Sōtōshū Shūmuchō 曹洞宗宗務庁, 2005). The Shūmuchō edition of the Denkōroku includes some items of Front Matter from earlier published editions, which are included in the English translations. Volume 1 also contains an Introduction that addresses such matters as the life of Keizan, the contents of the Denkōroku, the provenance of that work, and the textual history of its various recensions. In addition, Volume 1 includes a Bibliography that lists many works of modern Japanese- and English-language scholarship that are relevant to the academic study of the Denkōroku. The second volume contains a Glossary in two parts. Part One explains all of the Buddhist technical terms and Zen sayings that appear in the annotated translation of the Shūmuchō edition of the Denkōroku, found in Volume 1. Part Two treats all of the people, places, and texts that are named in that annotated translation. The Glossary also contains a wealth of material pertaining to the study of Chinese Chan, Japanese Zen, and East Asian Buddhist traditions at large, providing a broader historical context for understanding Keizan’s Denkōroku. Published in association with Sōtōshū Shūmuchō, Tokyo.

Transmission of Light

Transmission of Light PDF Author: Keizan

Category : Philosophy

Pages : 244

Book Description
A translation of the classic Denkoroku by one of the premier translators of Buddhist and Taoist texts illustrates how to arrive at the epiphanic Zen awakening known as satori. The essential initiatory experience of Zen, satori is believed to open up the direct perception of things as they are. "Even if you sit until your seat breaks through, even if you persevere mindless of fatigue, even if you are a person of lofty deeds and pure behavior, if you haven't reached this realm of satori, you still can't get out of the prison of the world." Deliberately cultivated and employed to awaken the dormant potency of the mind, satori is said to be accessible to all people, transcending time, history, culture, race, gender, and personality. Attributed to the thirteenth-century Zen Master Keizan (1268–1325), Transmission of Light (along with The Blue Cliff Record and The Gateless Barrier ) is one of three essential koan texts used by Zen students. Techniques for reaching the enlightening experience of satori are revealed through fifty-three short tales about the awakenings of successive generations of masters, beginning with the twelfth-century Zen master Ejo, dharma heir to Dogen. The translator's introduction establishes the context for Transmission of Light within the Zen canon and elucidates central themes of the work, including the essential idea that genuine satori "is not the end of Zen; it is more properly the true beginning."

Book Description
Eihei Dogen, the 13th-century Zen master who founded the Japanese Soto School of Zen, is renowned as one of the world's most remarkable religious thinkers. As Shakespeare did with English, Dogen utterly transformed the language of Zen, using it in novel and extraordinarily beautiful ways to point to everything important in religious life. "Dogen's Extensive Record" is the first-ever complete and scholarly translation of this monumental work into English. This edition contains extensive and detailed research and annotation by scholar, translator, and Zen teacher Taigen Dan Leighton, as well as forewords by the 18th-century poet-monk Ryokan and Tenshin Reb Anderson, former abbot of the San Francisco Zen Center -- plus introductory essays from Dogen scholar Steven Heine and the prominent American Zen master John Daido Loori.

A Blueprint of Enlightenment

Pages : 206

Book Description
Enlightenment is the most important work in each one's life. Enlightenment is the only way to verify awakening to the true nature of the self without the least bit of deviation. Gien Roshi explains the Blueprint of Enlightenment that Dogen Zenji gave us in his writing of the Guidelines for Studying the Way. Gien Roshi writes: The Bodhi-mind is the mind that wants to attain unsurpassed, complete, and perfect enlightenment. This term looks difficult, but the Bodhi-mind means the mind that seeks the Way. This Way is how you are right now. First, you need to ask, "What is my essential nature? What is the true nature of my mind?" To want to find out these things is very important. In other words, "What is the self?" You need to have the desire to be a person who can answer those questions and who can say, "This is what a human being is." Gien Roshi had that burning desire and now is able to elucidate Dogen's teachings. When Gien Roshi at last experienced complete, perfect enlightenment, he said, "In the midst of several thousand people, there was no one, no place, no me ... absolutely nothing. While there was nothing and no one who knows that, some condition touched this [body] and consciousness arose. Until then, the conscious experience was absent and then it suddenly rose up. And so, at that moment, "Oh!" From that time on, there was not the slightest doubt." Certainly, now is the time for Dogen Zenji's teaching, to get a new lease on life through Gien Roshi's commentary, the means to find the Way.
