The Lighthouse and the Observatory

The Lighthouse and the Observatory PDF Author: Daniel A. Stolz
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 110817406X
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 332

Book Description
An observatory and a lighthouse form the nexus of this major new investigation of science, religion, and the state in late Ottoman Egypt. Astronomy, imperial bureaucrats, traditionally educated Muslim scholars, and reformist Islamic publications, such as The Lighthouse, are linked to examine the making of knowledge, the performance of piety, and the operation of political power through scientific practice. Contrary to ideas of Islamic scientific decline, Muslim scholars in the nineteenth century used a dynamic tradition of knowledge to measure time, compute calendars, and predict planetary positions. The rise of a 'new astronomy' is revealed to owe much to projects of political and religious reform: from the strengthening of the multiple empires that exercised power over the Nile Valley; to the 'modernization' of Islamic centers of learning; to the dream of a global Islamic community that would rely on scientific institutions to coordinate the timing of major religious duties.

Bird Observatories of Britain and Ireland

Bird Observatories of Britain and Ireland PDF Author: Bird Observatories Council
Publisher: A&C Black
ISBN: 1408139057
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 609

Book Description
A comprehensive survey of the valuable work undertaken by Britain's network of bird observatories, with summaries and tables of noteworthy events and much historical background. Bird observatories are research stations established mainly for the study of migration, particularly by means of ringing. There are now 18 scattered around the Britain and Ireland at key points on migration routes, on coastal promontories or small islands. Part of their attraction is the regular occurrence of rarities that are found each year at these observatories. Written by wardens and ringers from each location, Bird Observatories of Britain and Ireland is a timely new edition of one of the earliest Poyser titles. It includes detailed coverage of the history, location, habitats and ornithological interest of each observatory, including summaries and tables of noteworthy events.

High-Mountain Atmospheric Research

High-Mountain Atmospheric Research PDF Author: Paolo Cristofanelli
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319611275
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 135

Book Description
This book presents the results of 20 years of atmospheric composition research studies carried out at the high-mountain (2,165 m a.s.l.) Observatory "O. Vittori" in Italy, part of the only global station in the Mediterranean region that belongs to the World Meteorological Organization’s Global Atmosphere Watch (WMO/GAW). It provides a comprehensive study with updated results for the most important atmospheric climate-altering and pollutant compounds based on the continuous observations at Mt. Cimone. Further, the book addresses the following main research topics in atmospheric sciences: non-CO2 greenhouse gases, reactive gases, aerosol particles and natural radioactivity. The book also presents an overview of the measurement site (both in terms of its geographical location and technical facilities), as well as extensive climatology references (in the form of plots and tables) for the atmospheric compounds monitored there. As such, it offers a must-read for atmospheric scientists, stakeholders, undergraduate and graduate students in related fields.
