Its strength depends upon quite a considerable amount of fibres which enter into its composition. As the tumor de velops, these fibres are enlarged, and apparently it not really, increase in numbers, until they constitute the most Of the thickness of the walls, and in some parts, make quite a thick ness, density and toughness of tissue. These qualities are greater in old large sacs than in the smaller and younger ones. For the most part, persons become constipated by carelessness and inattention, thus forming an irregular habit; the bowels become distended and weakened, and relaxed, thereby perpetuating the condition. In our directions to such persons, we should impress upon them the necessity of forming a regular habit of evacuating the bow els, at a regular time, and that they should let nothing hinder them from attending to' it, and that it is as easy to form a regu lar habit as an irregular one. All that can be done in this way, or by diet, or exercise, or drink, or by the use of our seedy berries and acid fruits, will be better done than by the use of medicines. The use of purgatives, and, particularly, of the thousand and one pills found in every drug-store, are a prolific cause of constipation, and their use is not only unphilosophical but reprehensible. Yet it will often be found necessary to empty the bowels; and if the faeces are uniformly dry, a saline laxative will be indicated, and of these, the sulphate of mag nesia is the best. As the effect increases, signs of debility and exhaustion be come more marked; the head cannot longer be held erect; the face assumes a death-like palor; the features are relaxed, and the extremities become cold - the chill gradually extends to the body. These symptoms are followed by complete loss of conscious ness; the respiration is now short, hurried, and incomplete, ao companied by trembling of the limbs; marked rigors, and severe spasms; the pupils become contracted and the sphincters relaxed. Excerpt from The Chicago Medical Examiner, 1869, Vol. 10: A Monthly Journal Devoted to the Educational, Scientific, and Practical Interests of the Medical Profession An incision was first made in the most dependent part of the tumor, in the anterior lip of the uterus, which extended trans versely from one side of the pelvis to the other, and must have been over three inches long; another, commencing in the centre of this, was extended up the posterior surface of the tumor, in the cavity of the uterus, as far as I could guide the scissors by the finger, with the hand partly introduced into the vagina. This last incision must have been more than three inches long also. The substance cut through was at least a quarter of an inch thick. The two incisions formed a L-shaped opening into the cyst containing the tumor. The freedom with which I could separate the walls of the cyst from the tumor encouraged me to attempt the removal of the whole mass, instead of a part of it. For this purpose, I introduced my left hand into the vagina, and my fingers high up into the cyst; and after some exertion, had the satisfaction to break up the adhesions of the tumor to its envelope over much of its circumference, and well up towards the upper end.
