Recycled Lives

Recycled Lives PDF Author: Julie Chajes
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0190909153
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 224

Book Description
A sizeable minority of people with no particular connection to Eastern religions now believe in reincarnation. The rise in popularity of this belief over the last century and a half is directly traceable to the impact of the nineteenth century's largest and most influential Western esoteric movement, the Theosophical Society. In Recycled Lives, Julie Chajes looks at the rebirth doctrines of the matriarch of Theosophy, the controversial occultist Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831-1891). Examining her teachings in detail, Chajes places them in the context of multiple dimensions of nineteenth-century intellectual and cultural life. In particular, she explores Blavatsky's readings (and misreadings) of Spiritualist currents, scientific theories, Platonism, and Hindu and Buddhist thought. These in turn are set in relief against broader nineteenth-century American and European trends. The chapters come together to reveal the contours of a modern perspective on reincarnation that is inseparable from the nineteenth-century discourses within which it emerged, and which has shaped how people in the West tend to view reincarnation today.

The Darkened Room

The Darkened Room PDF Author: Alex Owen
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 0226642054
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 345

Book Description
A highly original study that examines the central role played by women as mediums, healers, and believers during the golden age of spiritualism in the late Victorian era, The Darkened Room is more than a meditation on women mediums—it's an exploration of the era's gender relations. The hugely popular spiritualist movement, which maintained that women were uniquely qualified to commune with spirits of the dead, offered female mediums a new independence, authority, and potential to undermine conventional class and gender relations in the home and in society. Using previously unexamined sources and an innovative approach, Alex Owen invokes the Victorian world of darkened séance rooms, theatrical apparitions, and moving episodes of happiness lost and regained. She charts the struggles between spiritualists and the medical and legal establishments over the issue of female mediumship, and provides new insights into the gendered dynamics of Victorian society.

The Letters of H. P. Blavatsky

The Letters of H. P. Blavatsky PDF Author: Helena Petrovna Blavatsky

ISBN: 9780835608367
Category : Literary Collections
Languages : en
Pages : 674

Book Description
Helena P. Blavatsky (1831-1891) is widely celebrated as the leading esoteric thinker of the nineteenth century who influenced an entire generation of artists and intellectuals and introduced Eastern spirituality to the West. Until now, however, readers have been able to know this fascinating woman only through her public writings. Few may have realized that H.P.B. was also a tireless correspondent with family and colleagues, friends and foes, the learned and the simple. Her personal correspondence reveals for the first time the private H.P.B. in all of her sphinx-like complexity rarely visible in her published material. This unparalleled offering contains all known letters H.P.B. wrote between 1860 and the time just before she left for India in 1879. Meticulously edited by John Algeo, former President of the Theosophical Society in America and current Vice President of the international Society, the volume also contains letters to and about Blavatsky, articles, and editorial commentary.

Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 202

Book Description
In PR: Fifty Years in the Field, Jack Donoghue brings together the results of a lifetime in public relations — in the military, public, and private sectors. Each chapter focuses on a different public relations problem, so that the collection as a whole reflects the full spectrum of challenges that PR officers face. The book documents the strategies applied to and the lessons learned from public relations exercises involving such divergent events as the Hong Kong Courts Martial, the Manitoba flood of 1950, the Manitoba polio epidemic of 1953, and the National Energy Program. It also describes the PR problems presented by the Alberta nurses' strike of 1977 and the fiasco of Information Canada. Jack Donoghue's memoirs provide a different and instructive view on significant events in Canada's history.
